Board Notes Lafayette Parish School Board Regular Meeting February 15, 2006 Board Approves Resolution on Women's History The Lafayette Parish School Board approved a resolution recognizing the month of March as Women's History Month. The proclamation urges schools to observe this month through activities that focus on assisting all students in gaining a greater understanding of the national theme, "Women: Builders of Communities and Dreams." Board Approves Changes to Policy on Student Athlete Performance The Board approved revisions to Policy File: IDFA-R (also MDBA-R) - Administrative Regulations for High School Student Participation in Athletic Activities Student Athlete Performance Proposals. The Athletic Academic and Extracurricular Committee recommended maintaining the 1.5 grade point average which is required by LHSAA, but perhaps to study the possibility of increasing the GPA to 2.0 over the next year. Included in the revised policy is an academic action plan for students in all extracurricular activities, such as band, chorus, spirit, and speech and debate/drama. There are no state requirements for minimum GPA in these organizations. The Board asked staff to develop a resolution to send to LHSAA requesting that its minimum GPA to be raised. Board Ratifies Salary Schedules The Board ratified non-teacher salary schedules that were designed to recognize employees' relevant work experience. The new salary schedules are step-based similar to the teachers' salary schedule. The projected budget impact is $2,700,000. The new schedules impact the following groups of employees: Administrative/Professional, Support, Technical, and Crafts & Trades. The salary schedules can be downloaded by clicking here.
Board Cancels March 1 Meeting The Board voted to cancel the regular board meeting scheduled for March 1 due to the Mardi Gras holidays. Schools and all offices of the Lafayette Parish School System are scheduled to be closed on Wednesday, March 1.
In other action, the Board:
- approved the minutes of the Regular Board Meeting of 2-1-06;
- approved the minutes of the Special Board Meeting of 2-15-06 (appeal hearing);
- approved the minutes of the Joint Meeting of the Board Insurance Committee/Employee Insurance Advisory Committee of 2-7-06;
- ratified the bills for December, 2005;
- received a Curriculum Update on the activities of the English Language Arts lead teachers;
- received information on the following items, with action to be taken at a subsequent meeting:
- lease-purchase of portable buildings;
- lease-purchase of buses;
- revision of the Lafayette Parish Schools' Copyright Manual;
- permission to advertise and fill two computer programmer positions;
- revisions to Policy File: GBMAA - Voluntary Teacher Transfer Policy;
- bid approval for Boucher Elementary roofing replacement;
- request for policy for collection of overpayment or misappropriation of public funds from Board Member Hardy;
- approved personnel changes;
- approved the 2002 1/2-cent Sales Tax Fund Budget Revision #1, Fiscal Year 2005-2006;
- approved revisions to Policy File: IDDE-R - Summer Driver Education Program;
- granted right of way at Gallet Elementary to Town of Youngsville.
