Six Core Components

Safe school environment:

Ensure safe, clean schools conducive to learning, whcih include safety and security assessments at all  schools with improvements such as installation of video cameras for the highest priority buildings.

Alcohol, violence, and drug prevention

Equipping students with the skills to make responsible life choices through education, while training school faculty with necessary tools to recognize drug and alcohol use and to diffuse aggressive behavior.

School and community mental health preventive and treatment services:

Use of mental health support services to provide a spectrum of mental health support services, which includes an addition of eight professionals that will deliver school-based mental health and prevention and early intervention services.

Childhood psychosocial and emotional development services:

In order to ensure physical and mental health of at-risk infants and children less than four years old, childhood health services will be examined and recommendations made for additional services.  Staff and new parents will be trained in identifying risk factors and seeking early intervention.

Educational reform:

Promoting high academic achievement through prevention of substance abuse, violence, and gang activity through the expansion of after-school programs and improving classroom management and school discipline.

Safe school policies:

In order to support and expand community commitment to safe schools and healthy students, an Ad Hoc Committee will review and revise benchmarks annually.  The project will also develop a School Safety Report Card.
