Board Notes Lafayette Parish School Board Regular Meeting April 5, 2006 Board Recognizes Carencro High Boys' Soccer Team The Lafayette Parish School Board recognized the Carencro High School Boys’ Soccer team for winning the Nokia Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Division I State Soccer Championship. The game was played at the UL Lafayette soccer complex on March 4, 2006. The Bears defeated Fontainebleau High School, 3-1. Carencro High also defeated Brother Martin High School, 2-1, (20T) in the semi-finals; Acadiana High School, 2-0, in the quarter finals; Airline High School, 2-0, in the regionals; and Caddo Magnet, 4-3, in the bi-district. Carencro High Golden Bears are coached by Kert Talley.
Board Recognizes Lafayette High Girls' Soccer Team The Board recognized the Lafayette High School Girls’ Soccer team for winning the Nokia Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Division I State Soccer Championship. The game was played at the UL Lafayette soccer complex on March 4, 2006. The Lady Lions defeated district rival Barbe High School, 1-0. Lafayette also defeated Fontainebleau High, 3-1, in the semi-finals; Caddo Magnet, 1-0, in the quarter finals; St. Amant, 2-1, in the regionals; and Captain Shreve, 10-0, in the bi-district round. Lafayette High Lady Lions are coached by Kathie Breaux. Board Recognizes Northside High Boys' Basketball Team The Board recognized the Northside High School basketball team for winning the State Farm/LHSAA Top 28 Class 4A State Championship on March 11, 2006 at the Lafayette Cajundome. The Vikings defeated Ouachita Parish, 67-54. En-route to winning the championship, Northside defeated 4A nemesis Peabody Magnet High School, 57-55, in the semi-final; cross town rival St. Thomas More High School, 48-35, in the quarter finals; East Jefferson High School, 47-34, in the regionals; and St. Bernard Unified High School, 71-50, in bi-district. Northside High finished with a record of, 35-5, and is coached by Rick LeBato.
Board Receives Update on Desegregation Case The Board received information from Attorney Lane Roy regarding progress in the district's desegregation case. U.S. District Judge Richard Haik has scheduled a status hearing on April 24 at 1:30 p.m. Roy reported that the district will present evidence of continued implementation of the Schools of Choice plan and other progress that the district has made regarding the remaining Green Factors, on which the Board seeks unitary status. The two remaining factors are student assignment and facilities. Board Approves Hiring a Compensation Consultant The Board approved the proposal of services submitted by the Segal Company to provide compensation consulting. The cost of the compensation consulting services will be $50,000 and will be paid from the General Fund. The consulting services will include developing a compensation philosophy for the school system, conducting a market study of a set of jobs representative of each occupational group, developing a pay structure with steps consistent with prevailing market practices, and more. The proposal states that the consulting services can be completed within two months. Board Cancels April 19 Meeting The Board voted to cancel the regular board meeting scheduled for April 19 due to the Spring Break holidays. Schools are scheduled to be closed April 14-21. All offices of the Lafayette Parish School System are scheduled to be closed April 14 and 17. In other action, the Board:
- approved corrections of the minutes of its Regular Board Meeting of 3/15/06;
- received the committee minutes of the Joint Meeting of the Board Insurance Committee/Employee Insurance Advisory Committee of 3/14/06;
- received the Sales Tax Collection Report for February, 2006;
- received a Curriculum Update on the Schools of Choice Internship Program;
- reviewed a Power Point presentation about facts regarding the District Performance Scores as presented by Dr. Easton (link to the presentation here);
- received information on the ruling against the Lafayette High Boys' Soccer Team; the Board asked James Simmons, supervisor of athletics, to draft a letter and resolution on behalf of the Board to be presented to the LHSAA;
- received information on the following items, with action to be taken at a subsequent meeting:
- 2006 Summer School for Middle and Secondary School;
- 2006 GEE 21 Summer Remediation Program for High School Students;
- 2006 Extended Learning Summer Program for Pre-K-7th grade;
- 2006 ESL Summer School Program for Pre-K-12th grade;
- Grade 4th and 8th LEAP Summer Remediation School;
- WIA Summer Program at W.D. Smith Career Center;
- Special Education Extended School Year;
- Even Start Summer Program (June 12-30 and July 10-28, 2006);
- HIPPY Summer Program (June 12-30, 2006);
- Early Childhood Extended School Year;
- Revisions to Policy File: JCDB-R - Student Dress Code Regulations;
- New Policy File: JDIA - Cellular Phone Use for Students;
- Capital Improvement Fund Budget Revision #2 for FY 2005-2006;

- Permission to advertise for selection of architect;
- Bids for Prairie Elementary Structural Repairs;
