Lafayette Parish School Board Regular Meeting
May 3, 2006

Board Recognizes Overall Winners of Very Special Arts Festival
The Lafayette Parish School Board recognized the Overall Winners of the Very Special Arts Festival. The Visual Arts winner was: Alayna Alejandro, Acadiana High student and her teacher Sherrie deLatour. The Craft Arts winner was: Ryan Thomas, P. Breaux Middle student and his teacher Joan Lauber.

Board Recognizes Lafayette Parish Students of the Year
The Board recognized the 2005-2006 Students of the Year. The Fifth Grade Students of the Year are: Peter F. Schexnayder, Acadian Middle; Nicholas C. Saloom, L. J. Alleman Middle; Ariel Ledet, A. Boucher Elementary; Adia Washington, Broussard Middle; Caroline Turner, C. Burke Elementary; Sara Nicole Turpen, Carencro Heights Elementary; Heaven Thibodeaux, Duson Elementary; Aaron Woods, J. W. Carencro High; Blaire E. Belsome, Comeaux High; Alice Tzeng, Lafayette High; and Charlie Williams, Northside High. The 2005-2006 Student of the Year Competition Winners are: Peter F. Schexnayder, Acadian Middle; Brock Guidry, Judice Middle; and Luke Joseph Coussan, Jr., Carencro High.

Board Recognizes Daily Advertiser Staff
The Board recognized Sebreana Domingue and Doug Bruce with The Daily Advertiser for their involvement in promoting the Fashion Project at the W.D. Smith Career Center.

Board Delays Vote on Employee Health Plan Changes
The Board discussed recommendations from the Employee Insurance Advisory Committee, but delayed taking action after hearing from several employees. The Board asked the Employee Insurance Advisory Committee to bring a recommendation to the Board after communicating with more employees about potential changes.

Board Approves Resolutions
The Board approved a resolution recognizing May 10 as National School Nurses Day to acknowledge the contributions made to the development of school children by school nurses. The Board also adopted a resolution proclaiming the week of May 7-13 as Teacher Appreciation Week to pay tribute to the teachers who shape the future of children in our community. The Board passed a resolution acknowledging the month of May as National Physical Education and Sports Month and National Employee Fitness Month to emphasize the importance of physical fitness for people of all ages.

Board Votes on Special Election for Term Limits
The Board adopted a resolution calling a special election regarding School Board Member Term Limits. The Board voted that the Special Election be held on Saturday, July 15, 2006. The proposition summary states: AUTHORITY TO AUTHORIZE ADOPTION OF A RESOLUTION LIMITING THE NUMBER OF CONSECUTIVE FOUR YEAR TERMS OF OFFICE WHICH ANY MEMBER OF THE BOARD MAY SERVE, COMMENCING WITH THE TERMS BEGINNING ON JANUARY 1, 2007, TO THREE CONSECUTIVE FOUR-YEAR TERMS.

In other action, the Board:

  • approved corrections of the minutes of its Regular Board Meeting of 4/5/06;
  • approved corrections of the minutes of its Special Board Meeting of 5/3/06;
  • received the committee minutes of the Joint Meeting of the Board Insurance Committee/Employee Insurance Advisory Committee of 4/11/06;
  • ratified bills for February, 2006;
  • received the Sales Tax Collection Report for March, 2006;
  • received a Curriculum Update on Spanish Immersion and W.D. Smith Career Center fashion winners;
  • received information on the 2002 Half-Cent Sales Tax interest payout to teachers;
  • received information on the following items, with action to be taken at a subsequent meeting:
    • pilot HVAC maintenance contract;
    • early release of funds for library periodicals;
    • limestone bid;
  • approved personnel changes;
  • approved 2006 Summer School for Middle and Secondary School;
  • approved 2006 GEE 21 Summer Remediation Program for High School Students;
  • approved 2006 Extended Learning Summer Program for Pre-K-7th grade;
  • approved 2006 ESL Summer School Program for Pre-K-12th grade;
  • approved Grade 4th and 8th LEAP Summer Remediation School;
  • approved WIA Summer Program at W.D. Smith Career Center;
  • approved Special Education Extended School Year;
  • approved Even Start Summer Program (June 12-30 and July 10-28, 2006);
  • approved HIPPY Summer Program (June 12-30, 2006);
  • approved Early Childhood Extended School Year;
  • approved Revisions to Policy File: JCDB-R - Student Dress Code Regulations;
  • approved New Policy File: JDIA - Cellular Phone Use for Students;
  • approved Capital Improvement Fund Budget Revision #2 for FY 2005-2006;
  • approved Library Books Bid;
  • approved Carl Perkins Career and Technical Education Local Application Plan.
