Board Notes Lafayette Parish School Board Regular Meeting June 7, 2006 Board Recognizes Student with Perfect Attendance The Lafayette Parish School Board recognized Duane Prejean, a 2006 graduating senior from Carencro High, for perfect school attendance during his four years in high school. In addition, Prejean maintained perfect attendance during third through seventh grade. Three other students deserve recognition for perfect attendance but were unable to attend the meeting. They will be invited to a later meeting. Board Recognizes Golf Scholarship Recipients The Board recognized 10 students who were selected to receive scholarships from the proceeds of the 2006 Superintendent's Scholarship Golf Tournament. The scholarship selection committee decided that each recipient should receive a $2,000 scholarship to help them start their post-secondary education at a Louisiana college, university, or technical school. The students selected to receive scholarships are: Kandice Cook, Acadiana High; Tiffany Murphy, Carencro High; Jalissa Bates, Jeremy Guidry, and Stoney LeBlanc of Comeaux High; Huong Nguyen, Lafayette High; and Georgio Green, Kenneth Martin, Desiree Portalis, and Kelli Tomsa of Northside High. These scholarships are funded each year by donations from local businesses with Lafayette Coca-Cola Bottling as the major sponsor. Board Recognizes Paul Breaux Science Olympiad Team The Board recognized the Paul Breaux Middle School Science Olympiad team for winning first place at the state tournament. The team represented Louisiana at the national tournament at Indiana University in May. Board Approves Payment to Non-Teaching Staff The Board approved a recommendation from the administration to give all employees, who received only a .5% raise, a one-time supplement amounting to 2% of their salary. A stipulation was included in the motion that no employee would receive less than $1170 gross payment. The payments would be provided to employees on or before June 30, up to a week or so later to allow staff to program the payments. The Board continues to wait on results from the salary consultant in order to implement salary adjustments for non-teaching personnel. Board Approves Collaborative Planning Days for Elementary Teachers The Board approved changes to the 2006-2007 school calendar to include collaborative planning days for elementary school teachers. During these days, students would not attend school. In other action, the Board: - approved corrections on the Board Minutes of the Regular Board Meeting of 5-17-06;
- approved the minutes of the Special Committee Meeting on Expulsion Hearings of 6-7-06;
- received the Sales Tax Collection Report for March, 2006;
- received a curriculum update on the education of neglected and delinquent students;
- received information on the following items, with action to be taken at a subsequent meeting:
- Tutorial Pay Increase Schedule and Program Expansion;
- Band Uniforms Bid;
- Calculators Bid;
- Duplicator Supplies Bid;
- Garbage Collection and Recycling Services RFP;
- Large Kitchen Equipment Bid;
- Modular Aluminum Ramps Bid;
- Trailer Mounted Sewer Vacuum Cleaner Bid;
- approved personnel changes;
- approved a resolution regarding the adoption of millage rates for 2006 and revisions to Policy File: DFA-E - Millage Rates.
