Board Notes Lafayette Parish School Board Regular Meeting June 21, 2006 Board Evaluates Superintendent The Lafayette Parish School Board performed its annual evaluation of Superintendent James Easton's performance as the leader of the Lafayette Parish School System. President Kay Gibson announced that the superintendent received a favorable evaluation and his performance had exceeded expectations. Board Recognizes Alleman Band Director The Board recognized Joan Green, director of bands at L.J. Alleman Middle School, for being named the 2005 recipient of the Sudler Silver Cup award, sponsored by the John Philip Sousa Foundation. Only two middle school bands from the entire United States and Canada were selected for this international honor for 2005. Only 36 middle schools have been so honored in the past 22 years. The Sudler Cup is awarded only to middle school concert bands that have demonstrated extremely high standards in musical excellence at the national level over a period of several years and whose conductor has established and maintained a complete musical program in his or her school over a period of more than seven years and one which has had a strong influence in maintaining and raising the standards of middle school band musical performances throughout the United States and Canada. Board Recognizes Students with Perfect Attendance The Board recognized three 2006 graduating seniors for perfect school attendance. Amy Potter, Comeaux High, and Tiffany Clause, Carencro High, each maintained 13 consecutive years of perfect school attendance. Victoria Kokenge, Acadiana High, maintained four years of perfect attendance in high school and seven consecutive years overall. Board Recognizes Poche' Prouet Scholarship Recipient The Board recognized Chi Doan, graduate of Carencro High School, who was chosen as the recipient of the Poche' Prouet Associates, Ltd. Engineering/Architecture Scholarship to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for 2006-2007. Doan will receive $1,000 ($500 per semester for tuition fees). She plans to major in Architecture. This is the 16th year that the Poche' Prouet firm offers this scholarship to a student in the Lafayette Parish School System. Including this year's scholarship, the firm has provided $15,000 to the students of Lafayette Parish. James M. Poche' from Poche' Prouet presented the scholarship to Doan. Board Recognized All-American Baseball Player The Board recognized Alex Hilliard, Lafayette High School, who was selected as a member of the 2006 All-American Baseball Team. Hilliard was one of only 75 players across the country nominated by SportsLink, Inc. to participate in this premier national high school all-star event. After being nominated, Hilliard was one of only 35 players selected to play in the nationally televised baseball game. Hilliard received an all-expense paid trip for four days to the host city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The game was played on June 7 and televised on FOX Sports Net. Board Cancels July 5 Meeting The Board cancelled its regularly scheduled meeting for July 5 due to the July 4 holiday. A special meeting may be called if board action is required before its next regularly scheduled meeting on July 19. In other action, the Board: - approved corrections on the Board Minutes of the Regular Board Meeting of 6-7-06;
- approved corrections on the Board Minutes of the Special Board Meeting of 6-21-06;
- ratified bills for April, 2006;
- received the projection of the 1988 Half-Cent Sales Tax Distribution;
- received a curriculum update on the FastForward program;
- discussed a request from Board Member Rickey Hardy to delay implementation of the Insurance Premium Increase;
- received information on the following items, with action to be taken at a subsequent meeting:
- General Fund Budget Revision #3 FY 2005-2006;
- 2002 Half-Cent Sales Tax Fund Budget Revision #2 for FY 2005-2006;
- approved personnel changes;
- approved the bid of $73,362.50 from Stanbury Uniform Company to replace approximately 150 band uniforms for Carencro High;
- approved bids submitted for Calculators;
- approved bids submitted for Duplicator Supplies;
- approved awarding the contract for Garbage Collection and Recycling Services to Waste Management;
- approved bids submitted for Large Kitchen Equipment;
- approved the bid from Redd Team Manufacturing for Modular Aluminum Ramps;
- approved the bid of $29,500 from Shamrock Pipe Tools, Inc. for a Trailer Mounted Sewer Vacuum Cleaner;
- authorized the administration to continue all ongoing and normal expenditures until adoption of the Fiscal Year 2006-2007 Budget;
- rejected a proposal to request the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to add African-American History as a graduation requirement.
