SALLY RIDE SCIENCE FESTIVAL ENCOURAGES GIRLS TO EXPLORE
HANDS-ON SCIENCE AT LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY

BATON ROUGE, La. - As America's first woman in space, Dr. Sally Ride inspired young girls to pursue their dream to travel into space. Now, she's encouraging young girls to dig into hands-on science at Sally Ride Science Festivals across the country.

The festival's next stop: Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

The Sally Ride Science Festival will be held on Nov. 16 from 12:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. on the LSU Campus. The event is presented by ExxonMobil and Sally Ride Science and hosted by the Gordon A. Cain Center for Scientific, Technological, Engineering and Mathematical Literacy at LSU, in partnership with the Colleges of Engineering and Basic Science.

"As a former NASA employee, I am thrilled that Sally Ride Science is bringing this hands-on science festival to Louisiana," State Superintendent of Education Paul Pastorek said. "Sally Ride has been inspiring young girls to explore science and technology for many years and this festival is just one example of her extraordinary commitment to being a role model, educator and scientist."

The festival is targeted toward upper elementary and middle school girls, but is open to the public. It features discovery workshops for students presented by local scientists and engineers, and workshops for parents and teachers on how they can inspire and support students to pursue their interests in math and science. A highlight of the festival is an inspiring talk by astronaut Wendy Lawrence, a veteran of four space shuttle missions. The festival also includes a street fair with activities, booths and music.

"It is important for us to engage our students in hands-on math and science activities that stimulate the mind without losing their attention. Festivals like this accomplish those goals while also introducing young people to professionals enjoying success in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics," Deputy Superintendent Ollie Tyler said. "I applaud Dr. Ride's efforts to help our students as they continue to make academic progress in the areas of math and science."

The cost of the festival is $10 and advance registration is required. The registration fee includes the featured talk, workshops and street fair. Scholarships are available for those in financial need. For more information, call 1-800-561-5161.

“Pirate Visits Woodvale”

International “Talk Like a Pirate Day”       Samuel “Blackcoat” Roberts visited Woodvale in celebration of International Talk Like a Pirate Day”, Tuesday, September 19.  Blackcoat recently received a Letter of Marque from Woodvale’s Principal,  Vera Shanklin.  He visited the students to share his adventures on the high seas.

Blackcoat sailed across the Gulf of Mexico on his ship, the Singe Perdue.   A few of the classes at Woodvale Elem. were visited by Blackcoat during their scheduled library time.  Students in K-2 heard exciting stories about Blackcoat's fellow pirates such as Henry & the Buccaneer Bunnies & How I Became a Pirate.   The students in the upper grades took part in a discussion on the historical facts/events of piracy.  Booktalks were also given by Blackcoat enticing the students to check out one of these fascinating tales:  Treasure Island, Peter & the Starcatchers, or Pirates:  Raiders of the High Seas.

Some of the classroom teachers participated in Writing Contests & Treasure/Scavenger hunts; prizes were awarded.  Thank you PTC for your generosity!

Special thanks to P.E. Assistant, Stuart Keller for volunteering to organize and carry out this special event!
