Lafayette Parish middle and high schools provide English Language Arts study based on state standards that parallel national standards. The core courses of study develop students’ skills in listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, visually representing and critical thinking. Core English courses include sections tailored for diverse student needs. In grades six through ten, students explore diverse genres of literature and write for a variety of audiences and purposes. The literature study in grade eleven focuses on American authors, and in grade twelve the legacy of British authors. All grade levels pursue research related to the content of the course. District electives in English are varied and include courses in creative writing, film as literature, Shakespearean studies, mythology, Bible as literature, and others. Each high school offers electives based on student requests and staff availability.
