During the 1998-1999 school year our program provided services to 2,462 children and youth. The main components of our project are awareness; enrollment assistance; after-school tutorial programs in shelters; preschool/parent education; provision of school supplies/educational materials; coordination of school and community services and resources; and summer programs. During the summer of 1999, we had eleven summer programs throughout the ten parishes. Homeless children were given the chance to enjoy their summer like other children through these programs. Each week was filled with learning activities, fieldtrips, visits to public libraries, trips to the snowcone stand and family picnics in the park.
Our program is funded through a federal Stewart B. McKinney Assistance Grant. Louisiana receives approximately $650,000 in McKinney funds each year. This money is used to operate a state office and ten statewide programs.
