Lafayette Parish School Board Regular Meeting
April 4, 2007

Board Swears In New Board Member
The Lafayette Parish School Board witnessed the swearing in of a new board member to fill the unexpired term of the late Dr. David Thibodaux, District 7 Board Member. Lafayette Parish Clerk of Court Louis Perret conducted the swearing in for Mark Cockerham.

Board Nominates New Vice President
The Board nominated District 9 Board Member Rae Trahan as vice president of the board to replace the late vice president Dr. David Thibodaux.

Board Recognizes LHS Homeless Awareness Project
The Board recognized students from Lafayette High School who organized a school-wide awareness project about homelessness. Nick Totaro and Dustin Lail informed the board that nearly 600 students signed-up to "Sleep in a Box" for one night, April 4, at the LHS Football Stadium. Funds raised from the project will be donated to the Lafayette Parish Homeless Education Program.

Board Recognizes Plantation Elementary for Closing the Achievement Gap
The Board recognized Plantation Elementary School for the honor of being named by Standard and Poor's as one of only 12 Louisiana schools that significantly narrowed the achievement gap between higher and lower performing student groups, during the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 school years.

Board Appoints Assistant Principal for Broussard Middle
The Board appointed David Hebert as assistant principal for Broussard Middle School. He previously was a teacher at Lafayette High School.

Approved Resolution for National Library Week
The Board approved a resolution proclaiming the week of April 15-21 as National Library Week. The resolution encourages all residents to visit the library during this time to take advantage of the wonderful library resources available in this community.

Approved Change to 2007-2008 School Calendar
The Board approved a revision to the 2007-2008 School Calendar to reflect a change in the graduation date for all district high schools. The new graduation date will be May 17.

In other action, the Board:

• approved minutes of the Regular Board Meeting of 3/21/07;
• approved minutes of the Special Board Meeting of 3/21/07;
• approved minutes of the Special Board Meetings of 4/4/07;
• approved committee minutes of the Joint Meeting of the Board Insurance Committee/Employee Insurance Advisory Committee of 3/19/07;
• accepted the Sales Tax Collection Report for February, 2007;
• received a curriculum update on Smaller Learning Communities at all Lafayette Parish high schools;
• heard a proposal from Dist. 3 Board Member Rickey Hardy to rename the Board Meeting Room after Dr. David Thibodaux;
• discussed the future operation of the transportation department after hearing news that the recently appointed COO, Ronald Despenza, would not be relocating to Lafayette;
• received information on the following items, which will be brought to action at a subsequent meeting:
• Social Studies Textbooks Adoption;
• Advertise and Award oil, gas and mineral lease for Broadmoor Elementary School property;
• Advertise and Award oil, gas and mineral lease for E.A. Martin Middle School property;
• Advertise and Award oil, gas and mineral lease for Prairie Elementary School property;
• Advertise and Award oil, gas and mineral lease for L.J. Alleman Middle School property;
• Advertise and Award oil, gas and mineral lease for Woodvale Elementary School property;
• Bathroom Paper and Dispensers Bid;
• Limestone Bid;
• Library Periodicals Bid;
• Early Release of Funds for Library Periodicals;
• Early Release of Funds for Copier Agreements;
• Early Release of Funds for Replacement Textbooks and Consumables;
• Introducing EPA HealthySEAT;
• approved personnel changes as amended;
• approved revisions to Policy File: JGCD-R - Regulations for Medication Administration;
