Board Notes Lafayette Parish School Board Regular Meeting April 18, 2007 Board Recognizes Regional Athletic Director The Lafayette Parish School Board recognized LPSS Athletic Director James Simmons, Jr., who was selected as the Southern Regional Award Winner of the National Council of Secondary School Athletic Directors (NCSSAD). This was presented to him at the National Association for Sport and Physical Education at its national convention in Baltimore, MD, in March. Board Recognizes State Basketball Coach of the Year The Board recognized Devan Clark, who was selected as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 4A State Basketball Coach of the Year. Clark is the boys basketball head coach at Northside High School. Northside High finished the 2006-2007 season as District 5 - 4A Champions, State 4A Semi-Finalist, and appeared in the Top 28 with a 32-5 record with Coach Clark in his first year at the helm of the Vikings. Coach Clark is a graduate of Southern University in Baton Rouge. Board Recognizes Staff Receiving the SchoolDude.com Award The Board recognized the LPSS Physical Plant Services for receiving the SchoolDude.com "Unsung Superstar Award." Kyle Bordelon, director of planning and facilities, received the award in March at the SchoolDude training conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Also, a representative from St. Charles Parish Schools was at the training and received the same award. St. Charles Parish had several schools that were damaged by Hurricane Katrina, and were out of school for about 24 days. That district's Maintenance Department building also was destroyed. SchoolDude recognized both districts for the work that was needed to repair buildings and accommodate students after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Board Recognizes Science Winner The Board recognized Elizabeth Stephenson, from Ovey Comeaux High School, who was selected as the Senior Division Overall Runner-Up for her presentation: "Genetic effects of the Drosophila melanogaster under natural and altered conditions." Stephen will represent Lafayette Parish at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, May 13-18 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Board Recognizes National Board Certified Teachers The Board recognized six Lafayette Parish teachers who have earned Board Certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. These teachers join 25 other who have achieved certification. This brings our Lafayette Parish School System total to 31 National Board Certified Teachers. The following teachers achieved certification in 2006: Holly Boffy and Terry Turner, of Paul Breaux Middle; Cheryl Broussard and Carey Lemoine, of Prairie Elementary; Sue Prudhomme of Ossun Elementary and Marie-Josee Grondin of Acadiana High School. Board Recognizes National Merit Scholars The Board recognized the 2007 National Merit Scholars from Lafayette Parish Schools. National Merit Scholars represent the top 1/10th of one percent of students in the country. Students' grade point averages, school and community activities, honors, and leadership qualities contribute to their selection as National Merit Semi-Finalists. National Merit Commended Scholars place among the top five percent of students in the country who enter the National Merit Scholarship Competition. National Merit Finalists are: Acadiana High: David Harvey and Blake Richard; Lafayette High: Madeleine Brumley, Jack Gros, Tanmay Misra, Denys Zhuo, Charleen Fei, Renee Kimble, Kelly Roszczynialski, Robert Frank III, Aislinn McCloskey, and Beth Zhu. National Achievement Finalists are: Acadiana High: Aisha Broussard; Lafayette High: Michelle Gallien and Monique St. Cyr. National Merit Commended Scholars: Lafayette High: Andrew Best, Mateusz "Matt" Lapucha; David Richard; Zachary Hebert; Anthony Mai; Peter Thayer; Rachel Hudson; and Alicia Ranney. National Merit Special Scholar from Lafayette High is Dustin Lail. In other action, the Board: - approved minutes of the Regular Board Meeting of 4/4/07;
- ratified bills for March, 2007;
- received a Curriculum Update on Special Education Severe and Profound Community Vocational and Based Instruction;
- received a report on the mold testing results conducted at Plantation Elementary;
- received a copy of the Legislative Transportation Audit Report from 2005;
- received a legislative update from Senator Don Cravins, Jr.;
- discuss a form for the Superintendent's evaluation;
- received information on the following items, which will be brought to action at a subsequent meeting:
- 2007 Summer Program for Middle and Secondary School Students;
- 2007 GEE Summer Remediation Program for High School Students;
- 2007 Extended Learning Summer Program, Kindergarten through 7th Grade;
- 2007 ESL Summer School Program, Pre-K - 12th Grade;
- Grades 4 and 8 LEAP Summer Remediation School;
- Special Education Extended School Year (ESY);
- Title I Preschool Summer Program (June 4-29 and July 2-13);
- HIPPY Summer Program (June 4-29);
- Early Childhood Four-Year Old Summer School Program;
- Acadiana High Partial Re-roofing Project Bids;
- Broussard Middle Re-roofing Project Bids;
- approved the Social Studies Textbooks Adoption;
- granted permission to advertise and award oil, gas and mineral lease for Broadmoor Elementary School property;
- granted permission to advertise and award oil, gas and mineral lease for E.A. Martin Middle School property;
- granted permission to advertise and award oil, gas and mineral lease for Prairie Elementary School property;
- granted permission to advertise and award oil, gas and mineral lease for L.J. Alleman Middle School property;
- granted permission to advertise and award oil, gas and mineral lease for Woodvale Elementary School property;
- approved bids for bathroom paper and dispensers;
- approved bids for limestone;
- approved bid for library periodicals;
- approved early release of funds for library periodicals;
- approved early release of funds for copier agreements;
- approved early release of funds for replacement textbooks and consumables.
