Three students at J.W. Faulk won scholarships to attend the Summer Writing Camp offered by the Acadiana Writing Project.  India Leblanc was the recipient of the scholarship offered by Jacques Couvillon, author of Chicken Dance.
Kobe Bibbins and Akeme Sinegal were scholarship recipients presented by J.W. Faulk Elementary.  These third grade students demonstrated excellence in writing skills, determination, and dedication throughout the school year.

Twelve lucky students of J.W. Faulk Elementary received brand new bicycles on Wednesday, May 20.
These bicycles were donated by Larry Broussard and his co-worker/daughter, Allison LeBlanc, of Horace Mann Insurance, an insurance company "founded by educators for educators".  This generous act was done with an intention to  recognize outstanding citizenship, attitude, work improvement, and attendance.  The happy recipients of the new bicycles were 2 students from each grade.  The students were Dezorian Siner, Cassy Nash, Brandon Jolivette, Tyra Levier, Nikia Joseph, Dominick Norman, Gabrielle Lewis, Jermiah Jones, Ashley Moore, Jamar Allen, Katraevian Dominick, and Tatyanna Shelvin.    Larry Broussard, a former educator of 20 years and insurance agent with Horace Mann for 20 years, said that he wanted to offer this to the schools as a way to give back to the schools. Broussard noted thanks to Huffy Bikes and Wal Mart for providing the bikes at their wholesale cost.  Pictured are the 12 students who received the bicycles with Larry Broussard, Carol Mays, principal of J.W. Faulk, and Allison Leblanc.  Also pictured is Ms. Mays, principal of J.W. Faulk, presenting Mr. Larry Broussard with an appreciation certificate for the partnership between Horace Mann and J.W. Faulk Elementary.

Mrs. Nancy Hebert’s Speech Therapy kids are mostly ages 3-6.  We have been making “Valentine Mice” and “Shamrock Puppy Dogs” which are proudly displayed in the Kindergarten patio.  We just finished reading “The Kissing Hand” and discussed who we love the most in honor of Valentine’s Day.  We have also been making shapes with play-dough and putting together puzzles for child-directed play therapy.

Teacher Profile:  Kay Couvillon - Enrichment
What I love about teaching children in Acadiana :  " I love the acceptance and warmth that children exude naturally, like breathing."
Best teaching advice received:  "Set the context the first day.  Children are observing closely; they will behave according to directions, expectations, and sense of style.  (Most of them!)"
Favorite teaching magazine:  Classmate
Favorite part about teaching:  "Being with children and soaking in their curiosity, energy, and enthusiasm is my favorite part about teaching.  I also love the way they go forward with gusto; they haven't yet learned all the excuses that stop progress, the self-imposed ones."
"The most valuable thing I've learned from becoming a teacher is the connection to the world and to life.  We model life by learning, working hard, and playing spontaneously.  After graduating from college, I toyed with the idea of going to law school because I thought it would be more important.  Yet, I trusted that instinct, that knowing, that I was meant to be a teacher.  I loved school, loved learning, and school shaped who I am today."
"The one thing I want most for my students is to find joy every day in a book, a math puzzle, or a connection with friends!"

The 2nd grade classes at J.W.Faulk Elementary enjoyed a FAIS DO DO, with Little Nathan playing zydeco, on Friday, February 1, 2008.  This celebration was a culminating activity to a Social Studies unit covering the history, geography, waterways, symbols, and food of Louisiana.  Little Nathan not only performed for the children, but he also spoke to them about the importance of their education!  Food was sampled following the fais do do, while autographs were being signed!  J.W. Faulk Elementary extends sincere thanks to Little Nathan for sharing his talent, time, and enthusiasm with the students.
Pictured are students from Ms. Anger's 2nd grade class with Little Nathan.

TEACHER OF THE YEAR – J.W. Faulk
 Name:  Jill Sellers

Jill Sellers

Class/Subject:  4th grade/all subjects

Favorite part about teaching:

I enjoy creating activities and learning opportunities that encourage the students to be excited about what they are being taught.

The most valuable thing I've learned from becoming a teacher:

When given the opportunity, all students can thrive in the classroom in their own way. If high expectations are set, they can and will be met.

The one thing I want most for my students:

I want my students to feel confident in there abilities so that they can ultimately achieve success.

What inspired me to become a teacher?

As I grew up, I was able to watch my mother and father, who are both educators, impact students’ lives in numerous ways.

Best teaching advice you've ever received:

It is possible to have a well managed classroom with only two simple rules – be polite and be prepared.  All actions and behaviors fall under these categories, making it easy for the students to take responsibility for their own behavior.

How long have you been teaching? What schools/grades?

This is my fifth year teaching 4th grade at J. W. Faulk Elementary.

Any advice for upcoming new teachers?

All teachers should go to work knowing that each day they can and will change or better a student’s life in some way.

Mrs. Baudoin’s second grade class at J. W. Faulk Elementary is back from the Thanksgiving Holiday and ready to learn! We are learning about the planets and excavating fossils in Science class. We will use a toothpick (tool) to dig the chocolate chips (fossils) out cookies (soil). We are also studying the layers inside the Earth and will create a model of the Earth's layers using food. In writing class, we are creating a story about ourselves. We are reading the book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, by Judith Viorst, and using the bad things that happened to Alexander to write happy stories about our own wonderful, fabulous, terrific, very good day.

Speech therapists will conduct a speech and language screening in the areas of articulation, receptive and expressive language, fluency of speech, voice, oral motor functioning and oral structure, upon request, when there are concerns with a student's communication skills. Generally, a student is referred to the speech therapist, by his/her parents, teacher and/or physician. In addition, a hearing screening is completed to help determine if the student has adequate hearing acuity. A screening may indicate the need for a complete speech and language evaluation to determine if the student meets the criteria for the exceptionality of Speech or Language Impairment [articulation, language, fluency of speech and/or voice]. Speech and language evaluations are always conducted with parents' consent.
