SCHOOL DISTRICT LEGAL STATUS

The Constitution of the State of Louisiana requires the Legislature to provide for the education of the people of the state through the establishment and maintenance of a public educational system (VIII:1).  The Constitution also requires the Legislature to create parish school boards (VIII:9:A).  Thus the Lafayette Parish School Board is an instrument of the State, created by the Legislature.

Parish school boards in turn have been empowered by the Legislature to create a school district or schools districts within the parish and, in keeping with procedures established by law, to delineate and amend district boundaries and to consolidate districts within the area of the parish.  Each district so created by a parish school board is a political subdivision of the State (LSA-R.S. 17:1371).

Through action taken March 15, 1950, the Lafayette Parish School Board established Consolidated District No. 1 of Lafayette Parish as the only school district within the boundaries of the parish.
