Lafayette Parish Alternative Program for Students

The Lafayette Alternative Program for Students (L.A.P.S.) provides in-school prevention, intervention, and follow-up services for students that have been expelled from school. L.A.P.S. is designed to provide an educational environment, while focusing on the importance of accountability and responsibility. These principles are accomplished with a discipline regimen of physical training, social skills training and academic instruction.

  • Entrance Criteria
    - Grades 6-12
    - Actively enrolled in a Lafayette Parish School
    - Expulsion recommendation upheld
    - Completed application to LAPS within 5 school days of hearing
    - LAPS interview and orientation

    - LAPS will serve students who are expelled from school for drugs, weapons or violent/aggressive behavior
    - Students removed from the CAPS program may also be eligible
    - Students returning to school following incarceration may be placed in the LAPS program per Child Welfare and Attendance
  • Exit Criteria
    - Achieved set goals in the Boys Town Educational Model
    - Staff recommendation
    - Completed graduation requirements
    - Reached maximum age
