French I is an introductory course that focuses on all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.  The course engages students in direct oral and written communication for authentic purposes.  French I provides initial study in the sounds, vocabulary and structures of the language, as well as in cultural perspectives, practices and products of francophone societies.  Students are encouraged to use the language within and beyond the school setting and to make connections to other disciplines.  Students are also encouraged to view French I as the first level in a series of preparatory courses leading to post-secondary study in the language.

French II builds on the foundation laid in first-year French.  It develops and refines the student’s communicative skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing for authentic purposes.  New material is introduced in a contextual manner, and there is general expansion in the areas of pronunciation, vocabulary and structures of the language, as well as in cultural perspectives, practices and products of francophone societies.  Students are encouraged to use the language within and beyond the school setting and to make connections to other disciplines.  Students are encouraged to view French II as a preparatory course for post-secondary study in the language and to develop a supportive grammar base for both production and understanding.  Ninth grade students may be eligible for French II based on their success in middle school French and their results on the French I credit exam.

French III        Grades: *9-12

French III increases the student’s ability to use French for communication and builds the student’s fluency and confidence in using French for self-expression.  It is designed for students who are past the novice level.  While French III promotes further development of students’ oral skills, it also emphasizes the development of reading and writing skills through the study of authentic literature and increasingly complex grammar.  Students continue to learn about the cultural perspectives, practices and products of francophone societies.  Students are encouraged to use the language within and beyond the school setting and to make connections to other disciplines.  Ninth and tenth grade students may be eligible for French III based on their success in middle school French and their results on the French I and II credit exams.
