FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES Family and Consumer Sciences I Grade: 9 948104 Credit: 1 This course is an introduction to all Family and Consumer Science courses and is the foundation for the advanced study of Family and Consumer Sciences in high school. This course examines multiple life roles and responsibilities of individuals and family members. The focus is on the areas of personal and family living, wellness, nutrition and foods, financial management, living environments, appropriate child development practices, and transferring school skills to life and work. Through simulated experiences in a state-of-the-art computer modular lab, students learn to fulfill their responsibilities associated with the work of the family and community. Skills in mathematics, communication, science, technology, and personal and interpersonal relationships are reinforced in this course. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include field trips and service learning. FCCLA leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply instructional competencies and workplace readiness skills to authentic experiences. A lab fee is required for the purchase of foods and clothing supplies. Nutrition and Food Grades: 10-12 948204 Credit: .5 In this course, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of nutrition through the study of the Food Pyramid, food nutrients, label reading, menu planning, marketing, and preparing and serving meals. Career speakers are used to provide information in the areas of job opportunities available in the food industry. This course is a prerequisite for Advanced Nutrition and Food. A lab fee is required. Advanced Nutrition and Food Grades: 10-12 948254 Credit: .5 Students successfully completing Nutrition and Food are eligible to enroll in this course. This course builds on fundamentals learned in Nutrition and Food and is a continuation of those experiences. Students will continue to develop skills in preparing foods and managing the food budget. A lab fee is required. Foods for Entertaining Grades: 11-12 948304 Credit: .5 The areas of planning and preparing foods for special occasions such as dinners for several guests, showers, receptions and teas will be explored in this semester course. Students will be encouraged to create unique decorations for various occasions. This course may only be scheduled with teacher recommendation. A lab fee is required. Meal Management Grades: 11-12 948354 Credit: .5 In this semester course, students will explore meal planning; management of mealtime to save time, energy and money; budget meals; meals for two; and special diets. In addition, the study of consumer rights, responsibilities, and consumer protection will be studied. An in-depth study of food service careers in nutrition and dietetics will also be included. Prerequisite for this course is Nutrition and Foods or other FACS course (with food). A lab fee is required in addition to small personal expenditures for some supplies. Clothing and Textiles Grades: 10-12 948404 Credit: .5 This course will provide the student with the opportunity to master clothing construction techniques through clothing labs. The student’s knowledge of textiles and the selection and construction of garments with regard to good design and quality will be increased. Investigation of career opportunities in the fields of fashion, clothing and textiles will be conducted. A lab fee is required, in addition to small personal expenditures for some supplies (ex. clothing projects). This course is a prerequisite for Advanced Clothing and Textiles. Advanced Clothing and Textiles Grades: 10-12 948454 Credit: .5 This course is a follow-up to clothing and textiles for the student interested in mastering problem fabrics which require special handling. Students will construct garments or projects decided upon jointly by teacher and student. The suggested fabrics include plaids, stripes, checks, stretch knits, napped fabrics and one-way designs. Students will develop good buying habits in the selection of suitable fabrics, sewing notions and equipment. In addition, they will examine career opportunities related to textiles and clothing construction. A lab fee is required in addition to small personal expenditures for some supplies (ex. clothing projects). Child Development (Prenatal and Infant Care) Grades: 10-12 948504 Credit: .5 This course will focus on child development from conception through 18 months of age. The student will gain an understanding of the rapid physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth of the infant. Students are introduced to parenting decisions and skills and to career opportunities in working with children. The student will also become familiar with birth defects, immunizations, and routine care of the infant. Activities for observing and participating with children, critical thinking and hands-on activities will be provided the student. A lab fee is required. This course is a prerequisite for Advanced Child Development. Advanced Child Development Grades: 10-12 948554 Credit: .5 This course is designed for the student who wants to further his/her studies of the child from age two to six years. This course expands on the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth of the child. Emphasis will also be placed on childhood illnesses, discipline techniques and on the wise selection of clothes, toys, food and furniture for children. Awareness will be created on the importance of helping children to reach their full potential. Observations and creative activities will enhance the course content and give students practical application of the concepts presented. A lab fee is required. Family Life Education Grades: 11-12 948604 Credit: .5 This course places emphasis on the family as the foundation for a strong society. It is designed to help the student be a better family member through developing better communication skills, in studying solutions to coping with family and societal problems, and to resolving conflicts. The course integrates contemporary family issues and involves the students in activities that help them accept responsibility, build academic and thinking skills, and strengthen values. A lab fee is required. Housing and Interior Design Grades: 11-12 948714 Credit: .5 This course addresses selecting and planning living environments to meet the needs and wants of individuals and families throughout the life cycle considering a broad range of economic, social, cultural, technological, environmental, maintenance, and aesthetic factors. Emphasis is placed on selecting goods and services and creating functional and pleasing living environments based on sound financial decisions and design principles. Skills in mathematics, technology, and art are reinforced in this course. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include field trips, job shadowing, service learning, and school-based enterprises. FCCLA leadership activities provide the opportunity to apply instructional competencies and work place readiness skills to authentic experiences. The course is offered only to sophomore, junior, and senior students. Adult Responsibilities Grades: 11-12 948754 Credit: .5 This course is designed to help students develop skills to meet the challenges of daily life. It provides the student with basic information in the following areas: personal values and goals; family relationships; dating and marriage; sex respect; management; clothing construction and simple clothing repairs; selecting, coordinating and caring for clothing; foods and nutrition; and job skills. A lab fee is required. Leaders for Life Grades: 10-11 948764 Credit: 1 The students in this course will have the opportunity to increase their understanding and/or effectiveness in the following processes: communication skills, group processes, managerial skills, self-awareness, and human relations skills. Students will design and work on projects, which will develop social and personal leadership skills. The course integrates contemporary issues and involves the students in activities that help them develop personal and leadership skills, accept responsibility, build academic and thinking skills, and strengthen values. Skills developed will aid students in setting lifetime goals and making wise career choices. Additional emphasis will be placed on developing skills such as conversation, table etiquette and making introductions, which will make them more comfortable in social situations. Parenthood Education Grades: 11-12 948854 Credit: .5 This course helps students to build skills in family relations, decision making and critical thinking and in nurturing children’s development. The course stresses strengthening the role of the family and will help the student to understand the responsibilities, obligations, and rewards of parenting. Emphasis is on the joys and challenges of parenthood. A lab fee is required. ProStart I Grades: 11-12 948984 Credit: 1 This course is the first of two courses focused on preparing students for careers in the food service/hospitality industry. Emphasis is on obtaining skills for the industry-based certification and preparation for internships in the industry. The course utilizes the ProStart I text and curriculum developed by the National Restaurant Association’s Educational Foundation. Topics of study include skills necessary for careers in the hospitality industry, organization and management, professionalism, use of commercial equipment, proper sanitation and safety standards for industry, and essential math. This class includes laboratory classes utilizing advanced planning and preparation techniques. Skills in critical thinking, math, communications, and science are reinforced in this course. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course are service learning, field trips, and job shadowing. School-based enterprises, internships, projects, and FCCLA leadership activities provide opportunities for application of instructional competencies. It is strongly recommended that students have taken Nutrition and Foods. A lab fee is required. (All First Responder: AHS, LHS and OCHS only) First Responder Grades: 10-12 948974 Credit: 1 948994 Credit: .5 The First Responder course is a foundation for the Emergency Medical Technician Education Program. Students completing the First Responder course will receive the Louisiana State First Responder certification and will be eligible to sit for the National Certification Exam. Topics include CPR, airway management, hemorrhage control, bandaging, simple spinal immobilization, and simple splinting and infection control. Upon completion of the course, students can pursue specialty career fields such as EMT, CNA, LPN, RN, or MD. This course is also a valuable program for community service programs, such as a fire department volunteer. Offered at Acadiana High, Lafayette High and Comeaux High School.
