SPEECH

Speech I        Grades:  9-12

Speech I is designed for the student who would like to acquire more self-confidence and poise while developing formal oral communication skills.  It places emphasis on the organization, structure, research, and delivery required in public speaking.

Competitive Speech provides opportunities for students to develop public speaking, drama, and debate skills in preparation for competition.

Debate I is a speech course that presents basic debate and argumentation techniques such as organization, philosophy, analysis, and reasoning.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in interschool debate competition.  While there are no mandatory prerequisites, prior experience in public speaking is desirable.

Drama I is a speech course that stresses basic theater techniques and theories.  In Drama I, students have the opportunity to participate in class activities such as pantomime, role playing, improvisation, melodramas, and interpretive exercises, monologues, and duet performances.  Other work may be actual production of plays for an audience other than the class.
Speech II        Grades:  10-12

Speech II is recommended for the student who has already had a basic public-speaking course.  In this class, the study of speech is extended to include the total communication process.  Interpersonal communication is emphasized, and various elements of group discussion and decision-making are studied.  Students also gain skills in analyzing the speeches of the other students.  Other possible areas of study include broadcasting/film-making.

Speech II/Debate    Grades:  10-12

Debate II is an advanced speech course that builds on Debate I.  The student must have teacher approval to schedule this course.

Speech II/Drama    Grades:  10-12

Drama II is a speech course that focuses on advanced theater techniques with emphasis on drama competition.  Prior experience in drama or public speaking is desirable. The student must have teacher approval to schedule the course.

Speech III        Grades:  11-12

Speech IV is an advanced course in speech. The student must have teacher approval to enroll in this course.

Speech IV/Debate    Grade:  12

Debate IV is an advanced course in debate.  The student must participate in competitive tournaments.  Admission is dependent on teacher approval.

Speech IV/Drama    Grade:  12

Theater/Musical Performance    Grades:  9-12

Theater/Musical Performance provides instruction for schoolwide musical productions or advanced theater performance.  Admission is based on successful audition and teacher approval.

Technical Stage Production    Grades:  10-12

In Technical Stage Production, students participate in both classroom instruction and hands-on application in developing the skills and concepts needed to properly set up, run and take down technical equipment for theatrical productions.  They are evaluated through both written unit tests and performance assessment.  Prerequisites: Students must have previously completed one speech course at the high school level prior to enrollment.
