Employee Assistance Program

a benefit for employees and their dependents

An employee assistance program, or EAP, is a service designed to provide employees and/or their dependents confidential help in identifying and resolving personal issues.  Our EAP services are provided by Acadiana EAP here in Lafayette.  This benefit is funded by the Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS), and employees and/or their dependents receive up to six counseling sessions per person per problem per year at NO COST to the employee.  In cases where an employee or his dependents require help beyond the contracted services, the EAP staff will assist in finding continued counseling which is affordable for the employee.

When an employee or his dependents seek help at the EAP, the sessions are completely confidential.  No one at the LPSS will ever know the employee contacted the EAP unless the employee chooses to share this information.

The LPSS provides this benefit because the board, the Superintendent, and the administration believe that a healthy, happy employee is more effective in the classroom and in his or her position serving the students of Lafayette Parish.  Personal problems can affect a person's ability to concentrate and can cause absenteeism.  Receiving help in a personal crisis can save a job, save a family, or save a life.

People seek the services of an EAP for many different kinds of issues, such as

  • Family relationships
  • Loss and grief
  • Addictions
  • Crisis management
  • Conflict resolution
  • Workplace difficulties
  • Stress management
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Marital problems
  • Parent skill-building
  • Anger management
  • Balancing work and family

Dependents of an employee can seek help from the EAP without the permission or participation of the employee himself.  Acadiana EAP has affiliates in other cities who can provide services to dependents who live outside the Lafayette area.

To make an appointment, a person need only call 337-993-0000 or 888-327-7300.  The EAP office is located in downtown Lafayette at 600 Jefferson Street, Suite 902.  Free parking is available in the parking lot on Jefferson Street, directly across from the building.

A NOTE FOR SUPERVISORS

In situations where an employee's personal problems or employee conflict on the job is affecting job performance, a supervisor may make a mandatory referral of the employee to the EAP.  In this case, the supervisor must complete the supervisor's referral form and fax it to 337-354-2410.  The supervisor should meet with the employee(s) being referred and explain the reason for the referral.  In cases where the referral is mandatory (which means participation in the EAP is a requirement to maintain employment), the EAP reports to the supervisor that the employee has attended EAP sessions.  However, the counselor does not report the content of the counseling sessions.  A mandatory referral is a supervisor's attempt to help the employee improve job performance in order to avoid termination.

Supervisors may also call upon the EAP to work with employees at their work sites for issues such as

  • Grief counseling
  • Conflict resolution
  • Diversity training
  • Anti-harassment training
  • Preventing workplace violence
  • Time management
  • Improving communication
  • Developing and leading teams
  • Critical incident assistance
