Lafayette Parish School Board Regular Meeting
January 23, 2008

District 3 Board Member Sworn In
The Lafayette Parish School Board called upon a representative from the Lafayette Parish Clerk of Court's office to administer the oath of office to Lionel Lewis, Jr. Lewis was appointed to serve the unexpired term of Rickey Hardy until an election can be held in October. Hardy was elected to serve in the Louisiana Legislature and resigned from the School Board in December, 2007.

Board Approves Resolutions for February
The Board approved a resolution proclaiming the month of February as African-American History Month. Through this resolution, schools are urged to provide appropriate activities which focus on “Carter G. Woodson and the Origins of Multiculturalism” and assisting all students in gaining a greater understanding of the contributions which African-Americans have made and continue to make toward improving society.
The Board also approved a resolution recognizing the month of February as Caree and Technical Education Month, the theme of which is Discovering Skills for a Competitive Workforce.
In addition, a Board-approved resolution proclaimed the month of February as National Women in Sports Month.
The Board approved a resolution to recognize the week of February 4-8 as School Guidance and Counseling Week.

In other action, the Board:

• approved corrections of the minutes of the Regular Board Meeting of 1/9/08;
• approved corrections of the minutes of the Special Board Meeting of 1/23/08;
  
• ratified bills for November, 2007;
• ratified purchases for December, 2007;
• received a summary of grant funding and activity;
• received a Budget-to-Actual Status Report;
• received a Curriculum Update on the Lafayette Parish Extended Learning Program, which provides at-risk youth the opportunity to have extended learning time thus closing the achievement gap;
• reviewed responses to Board Member questions regarding the Legislative Auditor's Report, but requested that this item be put back on the agenda of the next Regular Board Meeting;
• received an update on LA Core 4 Curriculum as it relates to African-American History;
• received an update on the negotiations between Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital;
• received information on the following items, with action to be taken at a subsequent meeting:
• General Fund Budget Revision #1 - Fiscal Year 2007-2008;
• Capital Improvement Budget Revision #1 - Fiscal Year 2007-2008;
• Self-Funded Construction Fund Budget Revision #1 - Fiscal Year 2007-2008;
• School Food Service Fund Budget Revision #1 - Fiscal Year 2007-2008;
• LPSS School and Administrative Calendars for 2009-2010;
• Lafayette Parish School System Head Start Budget 2008;
• approved personnel changes;
• approved the 403B Program Administration continuation;
• approved the LPSS School and Administrative calendars for 2008-2009;
  
• granted permission to advertise and fill the position of Principal II - Katharine Drexel Elementary School;
• granted permission for staff to initiate a transition period in advance of February 1, so that people who are in the hospital or have procedures planned can have their claims processed as if Our Lady of Lourdes was still an in-network provider;
  
• approved the bids for regular education buses;
• approved the bids for physical education supplies and equipment;
• took no action the following items, requesting that they be sent to the Transportation Committee to correct language in the documents for the next Regular Board meeting:
• New Lease Agreement for Third Party Bus Use;
• Revised School Bus Lease Agreement;
• Revised Bus Driver Employment Contract;
• went into executive session to hear about pending litigation regarding N.P. Moss Middle School.
