Board Notes Lafayette Parish School Board Regular Meeting February 20, 2008 Board Recognizes AHS Coach The Lafayette Parish School Board recognized Acadiana High School Head Football Coach Ted Davidson for being selected for the second consecutive year as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Class FA Football Coach of the Year. Board Receives Donation from Chevron The Board recognized Chanel Jolly, Chevron Energy for Learning Program Director, and Jay Guenard, Operations Support Supervisor for Chevron Lafayette. Jolly and Guenard presented the Lafayette Parish School System a check in the amount of $165,000 for Phase II of the Energy for Learning program. The check was contingent upon the District’s ability to meet program milestones identified in the grant proposal, which focuses on technology in the classroom. Board Considers Future Use of Section 16 Property The Board reviewed a PowerPoint presentation about the future development of Chemin Metairie Parkway Phase II. Mayor Wilson Viator of Youngsville asked the Board for a right of access and entry to the Section 16 property owned by the School Board for the purpose of surveying and/or geotechnical investigation of the property. Board Approves Resolutions for March The Board approved a resolution recognizing the month of March as National Nutrition Month, National School Breakfast Week, and Louisiana's National Lunch Week. The Board also approved a resolution proclaiming the month of March as Women's History Month. Through this resolution, the Board encourages all schools to provide appropriate activities which focus on assisting all students in gaining a greater understanding of the national theme "Women’s Art: Women’s Vision," and of the contributions women have made and continue to make toward improving our country. In other action, the Board: - approved corrections of the minutes of the Regular Board Meeting of 1/23/08;
- approved the minutes of the Special Board Meeting of 2/20/08;
- approved the minutes of the Joint Meeting of the Board Insurance Committee/Employee Insurance Advisory Committee of 1/22/08;
- approved the minutes of the Special Committee Meeting on Expulsion Hearings of 2/20/08;
- ratified bills for December, 2007;
- received the Sales Tax Collection Report for December, 2007;
- ratified purchases for January, 2008;
- received a summary of grant funding and activity;
- received a Budget-to-Actual Status Report;
- received the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR);
- received a Curriculum Update about Lafayette Charter High School;
- reviewed responses received from staff in regards to the Legislative Auditors
Report, and asked the Grants Administrator to provide him with additional information and documentation on the 21st Century Grant; - considered a request by Board Member Beasley to provide non-financial incentives when recruiting new teachers to the Lafayette Parish School Sytem;
- approved personnel changes;
- approved the Superintendent's contract;
- pulled from the agenda a proposal to require all students to take 1/2 unit of African-American History prior to graduation;
- approved the General Fund Budget Revision #1 - Fiscal Year 2007-2008;
- approved the Capital Improvement Budget Revision #1 - Fiscal Year 2007-2008;
- approved the Self-Funded Construction Fund Budget Revision #1 - Fiscal Year 2007-2008;
- approved the School Food Service Fund Budget Revision #1 - Fiscal Year 2007-2008;
- approved the revised School Bus Lease Agreement;
- adopted a resolution approving the Lease Agreement for Contract Drivers;
- adopted a resolution approving the revised Employment Agreement between the Lafayette Parish School Board and Employee Bus Owner-Operators;
- approved the LPSS School and Administrative Calendars for 2009-2010;
- approved the Lafayette Parish School System Head Start Budget 2008;
- authorized staff to advertise and accept bids for the purchase of gas convection steamers;
- approved revisions to Policy File: IDDE-R - Summer Driver Education Program;
- approved the 2008 Summer Program for middle and elementary school students that need to repeat one or more subjects;
- approved the 2008 GEE Summer Remediation Program for High School Students in the core curriculum areas of mathematics, English language arts, science and social studies to assist student in passing the GEE;
- approved the 2008 Extended Learning Summer Program for K-7 at Acadian Middle, Carencro Middle, Katharine Drexel, Evangeline, J.W. James, Live Oak and Ossun elementaries, as well as the Broadmoor/Edgar Martin ESL program;
- approved the 2008 ESL Summer School Program for Pre-K-12;
- approved the 2008 LEAP Summer Remediation School for grades 4 and 8;
- approved the Special Education Extended School Year (ESY);
- approved the Title I Preschool Summer Program for June 2-30, 2008;
- approved the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) Summer Program for June 2-27, 2008;
- approved the Early Childhood 4-Year Old Summer School Program for June 2-July 25, depending on availability of grant funds;
- approved the bid from Ross Bus & Equipment Sales for air conditioning systems for five special needs buses;
- approved the lock box proposal for Sales Tax Division submitted by our current fiscal agent, IberiaBank;
- granted a right of way entry to the City of Youngsville for the purpose of surveying and/or geotechnical investigation of the property for the possible future extension of Chemin Metairie Parkway across Section 16 land owned by the Lafayette Parish School System;
- granted permission to advertise and fill the position of Assistant Principal II at Milton Elementary School;
- granted permission to advertise and fill the position of Program Coordinator for Assessment;
- authorized staff to accept the lowest and most responsive proposal as described in the RFP for Moss Middle School Moisture Intrusion Investigation.
