Positive Behavior Support
Dear Parents, J. Wallace James is excited to inform you that our school has begun implementing a new discipline system entitled Positive Behavioral Support. This parish-wide program helps parents and school staff create and maintain a safe and supportive learning environment, promote positive life skills, and reduce negative behaviors so that all children can succeed in school. PBS addresses both individual behavior and environmental factors and focuses on skill building rather than punishment. The STAR acronym above serves as our list of school-wide expectations from the students and staff. Feel free to use these expectations at home to reinforce what is being expected from the students at school. You are probably wondering what else you can do at home to assist us in implementing PBS. Parent communication with the school and participating in school activities can provide academic and behavioral support as well as help develop a healthy school climate. Additional ways that you can aid PBS are listed below: Teach your children the importance of school-wide expectations at home, at school, and in the community Volunteer in school activities Work to gather community resources for creating and maintaing the program Take part in the instruction and reinforcement systems if your child is part of a classroom or individual intervention program Celebrate your child's successes
New discipline forms and school-wide procedures have also been created in association with PBS. Please contact your child's teacher if you have any questions regarding new school policies. Thank you for supporting your child's academic and behavioral development by taking the time to read this letter. Have a wonderful year! Sincerely, J.
