The LHS mission is to inspire and empower students within a disciplined, academic environment to become ethical, well-rounded contributors to society.
Lafayette High School is one of the largest comprehensive high schools in the state. With a multi-ethnic populace, Lafayette High School's students and faculty share and enjoy the differences and similarities among the Acadians, Creoles, Hispanics, African Americans, Asians, Semites and the many other ethnic groups that attend. Lafayette High School was designated a Louisiana Distinguished School as well as a national finalist in the Secondary Effective Schools' Recognition Program. LHS has a reputation as a challenging academic school, in part because of its unique English program and its exceptional science and math programs. The curriculum includes gifted, advanced placement, honors, and regular level courses in English, math, science, social studies, and foreign language. Computer technology is not only a course offering but a vital strand that runs throughout the entire curricula. Lafayette High School's library acts as the hub for learning and is equipped with special computer components that allow students to research from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the Library of Congress, and the internet. The arts are well supported as evidenced by concert band, marching band, symphonic band, musical productions, and theatrical and visual arts. The communications department boasts competitive speech and debate teams, a school newspaper staff, and a yearbook staff. Vocational courses compliment the parish's vocational career programs with additional courses in business, computer business courses, home economics, agriculture and industrial arts. There are extensive Special Education Programs which range from the multi-handicapped, learning disabled to the gifted. Classes for the hearing impaired and visually impaired are offered.
