The Lafayette High Academy of Health Careers is designed to introduce students to all careers in the health care field and to prepare students for a technical college, a community college, university or the workforce. Students must enter the academy their freshman year or sophomore year. Students entering their sophomore year are required to take two academy courses. Applications are available on line at lafayettehigh.net or in the LHS guidance office. Applications are due in the spring of each year. Applications include an interview, and recommendations from a science and math teacher. Students are currently chosen by a lottery. Once students are accepted in the academy, they must keep a good record of attendance and discipline. Those in violation will be removed from the academy and will be sent back to their zone school. Academy courses include: Introduction to Health Careers, health Science I & II, Allied Health Services I & II, Molecular Genetics, Forensics, Pharmacy Tech, Certified Nursing Assistant and Internship. During the student's 10th and 11th grade summers, they may be enrolled in AHEC of a summer program, which places students into various hospitals and allows them to experience health care related topics. Students will be assigned a health care mentor to meet with them regularly for advice and as a resource for classes. Students will be expected to volunteer at local health care agencies. These sites will be arranged for the students. |
