Lafayette Parish School System Coordinated School Health
In an effort to streamline school system operations and save taxpayer dollars, Lafayette Parish School System Superintendent Dr. Donald Aguillard’s reorganization plan includes the elimination of the District Health and Wellness Department. Instead, the district will transition to a Coordinated School Health Model which will be more focused on site-based services, not requiring as many district-level administrative positions.
Among the groups affected by the change are Lafayette Parish School System social workers. Of the 30 social workers in the former Health and Wellness Department, seven will be moved to the Pupil Appraisal in the Special Education Department. Two will be based at Moss Preparatory School, one will be based at the Carencro Middle Health Center, and the remaining 16 will report to Steve Fruge, Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance. The changes also reflect a reduction in staff by four social workers. School nurses will now provide services in the Child Welfare and Attendance Department under the supervision of Sharon Richard, Nursing Supervisor.
Despite the reduction in staff, the Lafayette Parish School System will work diligently to continue to provide quality services to students. It is also important to note that the Lafayette Parish School System continues to be in compliance with all federal and state regulations concerning Coordinated School Health services.
