The Louisiana Department of Education Releases School-level Data on Graduation Rates
The Louisiana Department of Education released school-level data on graduation rates today. Most high schools made significant gains in the graduation rate of 2014-2015 seniors. Even more notably, however, schools made very impressive gains in the graduation rate of African American students.
Acadiana High School’s overall graduation rate was 71.2%, a 4.8% increase over the previous year. Carencro High School’s rate rose 2.5 point to 62.1%. Comeaux High School’s rate was 79.1%, a 5.8 point gain. Lafayette High School’s rate was 88.1%, a 9 point gain over the previous year. Northside High School’s rate was 65.7%, a 10.6 point gain over the previous year. The Early College Academy’s rate remained stable at over 95%, and David Thibodeaux STEM Magnet Academy’s rate was 91.2%, a 9.1 point gain.
At Acadiana High School, the graduation rate among African American students was 66.5%, a 7.5 point gain. 59.2% of African American students at Carencro High School graduated in 2015 which was 10.3 points higher than the previous year. At Comeaux High School, the graduation rate for these students was 73.2%, an 11.8 point gain. Lafayette High School’s graduation rate for African Americans rose 19.7 points to 82.1%. The graduation rate for African Americans at Northside High School was 66.7%, a 12.7 point gain over the previous year. David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy saw an 18.9 point gain in the graduation rate for African American students. The graduation rate for these students was 88.9%.
When asked about the contributing factors to the increase in the graduation rate at David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy, principal Jeff Debetaz noted that efforts to clean up student data at the school and the district helped a great deal. He also said that “at Thibodaux we work very hard to individually mentor our students, so that we can keep them in school and on track for graduation.” Mary Sonnier, principal at Comeaux High attributed the higher graduation rates to the Instructional Focus study period. During this time, students are given intensive remediation in core subjects, as needed, as well as ACT, PLAN, and End of Course Exam test prep.
