Changes Are Made to Lafayette Parish Graduation Schedule

Cajundome officials informed Superintendent Donald Aguillard this past Sunday evening that the facility would not be available for graduation on the scheduled dates of May 14 and May 18. A conflict arose when Cajundome officials became aware that they had the opportunity to host two concerts on these dates. Prior to notification by Cajundome officials, Superintendent Donald Aguillard and district administrators had notified Cajundome representatives that they were unwilling to change the date of graduation, as most graduation announcements had already been printed, and seniors had made plans for visiting family members and senior trips.

After meeting with high school principals and hearing concerns about moving the graduation to May 25, the district has moved the date of graduation to May 10 and May 11. Northside High School and David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy will hold graduation ceremonies on Friday, May 10, and Acadiana High, Carencro High, Comeaux High, and Lafayette High will have graduation on Saturday, May 11. The change was not an easy one for school officials to make. It is only possible because the current school calendar has extra minutes of instruction built in, so that students will meet the state seat time requirement. The fourth grading period will be adjusted to balance grades over the remainder of the school year. Seniors working on credit recovery will now have an abbreviated amount of time to finish, possibly jeopardizing their ability to graduate on time. Some Advanced Placement students will have to return to school after graduation to take AP exams, and we are currently negotiating with UL Lafayette to have grades released early for 67 dual enrollment students. To complete transcripts in time for a May 10 or May 11 graduation ceremony, the school system needs to have final grades by May 7. Grades for UL Lafayette students are currently scheduled to be released on May 14. Invitations for all high schools will have to be reprinted at a cost that has yet to be determined. Schools and students will not have to carry the financial burden of reprinting announcements. See the attached document for further details on the new schedule.
