High School Graduation Stay Safe Procedures

The Lafayette Parish School System wants to remind members of our community that in-person high school graduation will take place next week from July 9-11, 2020 at the Cajundome. District administrators have been working closely with the Cajundome staff to ensure that strict safety protocols are in place and that CDC guidelines are being followed to create a safe and memorable event for all to enjoy. While LPSS is excited to honor our graduates during this precarious time, we must plan for extra steps and procedures and adhere to safety protocols to protect everyone in attendance.

In order to minimize contact with others, LPSS is following Phase 1 protocol (25% capacity), even though the State is currently in Phase 2 of reopening. Capacity will be limited as students are only allowed four tickets to invite family members (or guests) to the ceremonies. Individuals without a ticket will not be allowed to enter. Families will have pre-assigned seating and will remain seated together for the duration of the event. Individual families will be seated together but grouped in a checker-board pattern with multiple empty seats in between families in order to practice social distancing.

Everyone entering the Cajundome is required to wear a face covering, this includes guests, students and staff. In addition, thermal cameras will be utilized to screen temperatures of everybody entering the facility. Those with a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher will not be allowed to enter the facility. In some cases, the accompanying group may be denied entrance.

To reiterate, anyone not wearing a face covering will not be allowed to enter graduation ceremonies. Anyone having excessive body temperature (100.4 or more) will trigger a more detailed examination by an EMT and may result in the individual being asked to leave the Cajundome.

Guests should be aware of the Cajundome’s clear bag policy. No large bags are allowed. Only 4” x 6” clear bags are allowed. Exceptions include medical bags or diaper bags. View the clear bag policies at

While food will not be available at concession stands, bottled water and soft drinks will be available for purchase. Water fountains will be turned on and patrons are encouraged to carry water bottles or sealed containers to fill with drinking water. Filling a container or glass is preferable to drinking directly from the fountain. Cajundome employees will be stationed in zones throughout the Cajundome to sanitize the water fountains and other key touch points frequently, such as bathroom facilities.

Guests should know that students have been given detailed instructions from their individual schools, with the goal of having a safe and dignified graduation experience. Graduates will be seated at an appropriate distance from their classmates and have been instructed to not congregate prior to or after the ceremonies. They have also been instructed to return to their vehicles as soon as the graduation ceremony is over. Therefore guests are advised to take photographs off-site with graduates before or after the ceremonies.

Photographs will not be allowed during the graduation ceremony, but the video will be live streamed and available for anyone to view via the Cajundome website ( Videos can also be purchased for $20 via the same website starting July 6.

LPSS offers these guidelines and expectations to our families so that they can make informed choices regarding attendance at graduation. Considering the circumstances, it is a safe and effective method to conduct in-person graduation ceremonies for our seniors who have worked so hard to achieve this milestone. We hope you will join us either in person or virtually to congratulate our graduates.
