STEM Academy

Scientific literacy is the ability to use scientific knowledge (in physics, chemistry, biological sciences, and earth/space sciences) and processes to understand the natural world but to participate in decisions that affect it (in three main areas – science in life and health, science in Earth and environment, and science in technology).

"To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old questions from a new angle, requires creative imagination and marks real advances in science." - Albert Einstein

STEM Science’s focus is designed to assist teachers with effectively incorporating technology, engineering, and math into the science curriculum.  To ensure that all students are involved in STEM Science, teachers are encouraged to challenge students to use inquiry to perform real- world lab experiments such as extracting DNA from strawberries, determining physical and chemical properties of certain substances, and building hot air balloons while studying atmospheric layers and weather.  While partnering with UL and Northside High, students have an opportunity to experience hands -on activities associated with weather balloon satellite projects and are able to interact with professors concerning geological processes.

Students involved in STEM Science are developing the academic knowledge and skills necessary for success in higher education and the workplace in fields such as chemical engineering and biology, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and environmental engineering.
