History
History of Green T. Lindon Elementary School
Green T. Lindon Elementary School was constructed in 1959. During this time, schools in Lafayette Parish were segregated; therefore, the school's name was Youngsville Negro Elementary. It was the school that provided educational services to African-American students in the Youngsville area.
Years later, after the historic Brown vs. Board of Education Supreme Court case, segregation of schools was outlawed. The school's principal, Edward Sam, was assigned the task to rename the school. Mr. Sam and the PTA embarked on this task and decided to honor families who displayed significant contributions to the education of African-American children in the Youngsville community: The Greens, The Thibeauxs, and The Lindons. Of these families, three individuals were recognized: Mr. Romain Green, Mr. John Thibeaux, and Mr. Horace Lindon. Their pictures currently hang in the lobby of the Administrative Building. After this process, Green T. Lindon Elementary was born!
In 1981, the school district began a construction project to expand the size of the school. This project was completed in 1982.
Over the years, the Youngsville community experienced overwhelming growth. The population of the school gradually outgrew the existing facility. The need for a larger school was imminent. Portable buildings were added whenever there was a need, creating a situation where there were more classes in portable buildings than in the original building.
In 2013, the Lafayette Parish School Board embarked on an expansion project, totaling more than 8 million dollars. This project creates 4 classroom buildings (30 classrooms), a multipurpose building, an administrative office building, renovations to the cafeteria, and a new parking lot. In January 2015, staff and students moved into three of the new classroom buildings, administrative office building, and the multipurpose building. Renovations to the cafeteria, construction of the last classroom building, and construction of the parking lot is still ongoing.
Presently, Green T. Lindon Elementary School continues to provide high quality educational services to more than 800 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The administration, faculty, and staff continues the commitment to create outstanding opportunities for learning every single time the students enter the building.
