LPSS’s Tia Trahan Earns Prestigious Principal of the Year Award

A school principal serves as the driving force behind a thriving school community. Dedicated visionaries, they pave the way for the success of both students and educators. It is no wonder that Tia Trahan, Principal of Lafayette Middle School, has been recognized as the 2024 Overall Principal of the Year by the Louisiana Department of Education. Her unwavering commitment to the students and faculty she serves makes her a true advocate for education.

Trahan has been leading with dedication since she embarked on her educational journey 21 years ago. Starting as an elementary school teacher, Trahan transitioned to the role of a reading facilitator and then an assistant principal before assuming the position of principal at Milton Elementary/Middle School. In 2017, she made the move to Lafayette Middle School, where she fostered a culture of excellence and created a welcoming learning environment for students.

Trahan's tireless efforts, combined with the hard work and dedication of LMS students and educators, earned state recognition as a 2022 Comeback Campus. The school witnessed a notable increase in the percentage of students scoring mastery or above on state tests, along with a decrease in the number of students scoring unsatisfactory. Remarkably, the school's letter grade improved from a D-ranking to a C-ranking during the height of the pandemic.

With a deliberate approach, Trahan anticipates the future and leaves a positive impact on the lives of those around her. In addition to her ongoing efforts at Lafayette Middle School, Trahan will collaborate with fellow principals across the state to share her vision and strategies that have proven successful. LPSS is honored to have Trahan as a member of its leadership team and eagerly anticipates watching her flourish as an education trailblazer.
