LPSS Hosts Campus Security Meeting

Recently, Superintendent Irma Duplechain Trosclair and the district’s administrative team hosted leaders from local governing bodies, law enforcement agencies, and surrounding school districts to discuss safety and security challenges schools across the state are facing today.

A major focus of the meeting centered around the need to better secure campuses built during a time when school campuses were designed to be open. Allowing unrestricted access onto a school’s property makes it difficult for administration to know who is on campus at all times, an important aspect to maintaining a secure campus. The officials gathered to view a presentation on the district’s recent assessment and installation of perimeter fencing and accompanying Aiphone video intercom systems to further enhance a single entry point to control both internal and external access to school campuses.

“Through collaborations with our law enforcement partners, we have worked over the past few years to make significant procedural changes and facility upgrades to make our campuses more secure. We felt it important to share the work we have done with neighboring school districts as well as receive feedback from other leaders in our area.” states Superintendent Trosclair.

Following the presentation, the group participated in a demonstration from CEIA, the maker of the OPENGATE weapons detection system. The OPENGATE weapons detection systems are lightweight, portable, and operate both indoors and outdoors. The district has purchased 75 OPENGATE weapons detection systems for use on each middle and high school campus across the district during daily student intake, sporting events, and other school-related activities.

Assistant Superintendent of Administration and Operations Jennifer Gardner stated “Myself and other members of the district leadership team have done extensive research on weapon detection systems in school settings. We traveled to school districts in Louisiana and Texas to see different systems in action to find one that will meet the unique needs of each of our school campuses and the OPENGATE system allows us the flexibility to meet those needs.”
