Eclipse Viewing for Lafayette Parish Public School Students

On August 21, the Lafayette Parish School System will provide teacher-led viewing of the solar eclipse. Students will be provided with the appropriate solar filter glasses or pinhole viewers to view the eclipse safely. Schools participating in outdoor viewing activities provided parents of K-5th grade students with a permission slip and 6-12th grade students an “opt-out” form if they do not want their children to participate in viewing activities.

Students who are not participating in teacher-led eclipse activities will be kept inside for their safety. They will be able to view the eclipse on a live stream at NASA TV Public-Education.

We want to remind parents who wish to view the eclipse with their children that looking at the sun without the proper solar filter glasses can cause permanent eye damage. We encourage parents to visit NASA’s website for detailed safety information and general eclipse information.
