LPSS Seniors Urged to Take February ACT Test

All high school seniors are encouraged to take the ACT test on February 6, 2021. Many students have already taken the test at least once so this is an opportunity to improve their scores to qualify for increased financial support from a variety of sources. For those who haven’t already tested, it isn’t too late, but time is running out. In order to be considered for enrollment and/or various scholarships/financial assistance at most state universities, an ACT score is required and should be submitted ASAP. The deadline for registration for the February test is January 8, 2021.

Most four-year colleges in Louisiana require a minimum score of 19 in Math and 18 in English for admission. Any student who has scored below that threshold has the opportunity to raise their score via a second test. In addition, qualification for TOPS requires a score of 20 and TOPS Tech requires 17, meaning an increase of even a single point or two can make all the difference in education funding.

Students and their families should be aware that 65 percent of jobs currently require some form of post-secondary education, whether it be a four-year university, a two-year associate’s degree, or other technical training and certification. By working to attain the best score possible now, students can maximize the opportunities available to them after graduation. Even an improvement of a few points can make all the difference, so the time spent preparing is a worthwhile short-term investment in their long-term success.

There are many free resources available to students who are interested in raising their ACT scores. GEAR UP coaches and senior counselors can assist students one-on-one and connect them with a number of free tools, including Mastery Prep. This industry-leading online platform offers students customized test prep and remediation to meet their unique needs, including practice tests and subject-focused lessons. All LPSS students have log-in access to Mastery Prep, and can get further assistance from school counselors or their GEAR UP coach. The Lafayette Public Library also offers a number of free tools to students — accessible with just their school ID card.

Students who have only tested through their school should be aware that the February ACT test will require them to create an account on ACT.org and register online. Students needing assistance with this step can request help from a counselor or their GEAR UP coach. Any students/parents who are interested in accessing preparatory tools ahead of the next ACT test are also welcome to contact Lafayette High School GEAR UP Coach Cy Dugas at cmdugas@lpssonline.com.

LPSS GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a college-access program that provides students and families with the support and resources they need for college success.
