School board officials, community members, teachers, and students gathered this morning at Myrtle Place Elementary School to commemorate the opening of a new playground for students. The playground comes as result of an initiative by school board members to provide funding for projects that fall outside the scope of capital improvements funding normally dedicated to projects that directly address the safety and wellbeing of students and teachers. Having recognized the need for projects like the Myrtle Place playground, board members pledged to allocate matching funds for money that schools could raise toward projects like this one. Over the course of approximately 6 weeks in October and November, the school raised approximately $32,000, which the board matched to cover the cost of the $64,000 project. The Kiwanis Club of Lafayette donated over $13,000 to the school for the playground. Many other businesses and families also made generous donations. In his remarks, Superintendent Aguillard praised the School Board and members of the community for uniting in support of the children at Myrtle Place Elementary. Board Member Justin Centanni reiterated the School Board’s continuing commitment to partner with the community in support of the students of Lafayette Parish. Principal Catherine Bricelj expressed her deep gratitude for the efforts of the board, her Parent-Teacher Organization, and members of the community. To date, the board’s fund-matching program has paid for 11 projects like this one.
