Hurricane Harvey Update

August 30, 2017 11:00am:

Lafayette Parish public schools and offices will be open on Thursday, August 31. The Lafayette Parish School System stands ready to take in any students displaced by Tropical Storm Harvey. Students displaced by flooding qualify for homeless status if they are sharing housing with other persons, including those who are doubled-up with family members or are living in shelters, motels, hotels, trailer parks, or camping grounds due to lack of adequate accommodations. These students will be enrolled immediately and provided with school uniforms. The school system will make every effort to provide services for students with special needs regardless of whether student records, such as IEPs, are available. Parents who wish to enroll their children should contact Dr. Amy Fontenot at 337-521- 7251 or arfontenot@lpssonline.com.

August 29, 2017 11:20am:

Lafayette Parish public schools will remain closed Wednesday, August 30. Tropical storm Harvey’s forecasted track indicates a continued threat of heavy rain, dangerous flooding, and isolated tornadoes. Depending on where the rain bands fall, Lafayette could see anywhere from 5 to 10 inches of rain on Wednesday. Some local road closures are now in place with the potential for more, depending on the level of rainfall. The Central Office will remain closed as well. Essential personnel remain on standby. A decision about whether or not to remain closed on Thursday will be made tomorrow.

August 28, 2017 11:30am:

Lafayette Parish public schools will remain closed Tuesday, August 29. There is the potential for another 6 inches of rain over the next 24 hours, and the threat of flooding is expected to continue. The Central Office will remain closed as well. Essential personnel remain on standby. A decision about whether or not to remain closed on Wednesday will be made tomorrow. New bus routes for Gifted and ESL will begin Tuesday, September 5.

August 27, 2017 5:45pm:

Lafayette Parish public schools will be closed Monday, August 28. The parish received an average of 2 inches of rainfall today with the National Weather Service predicting a possible 3 more inches overnight tonight and another 3 to 5 inches on Monday. In addition, there remains a threat of isolated tornados with these severe rain bands. We expect there to be some localized road closures tomorrow, as there are already a few road closures in the parish. The Vermilion River has risen 3 1⁄2 feet today. For the safety of our students and employees, we are canceling school for Monday. Custodians and essential personnel should remain on standby. We will continue to monitor the storm to assess conditions for Tuesday. As of this time, schools are closed Monday only.

August 27, 2017 12:00pm:

Lafayette Parish School System administrators are monitoring Tropical Storm Harvey closely. There are no plans to close school at this time; however, school officials will continue to monitor the situation closely and to meet daily with the Lafayette Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness.

August 24, 2017:

The Lafayette Parish School System is carefully monitoring the progress of Hurricane Harvey so that we may be prepared to take whatever action might be warranted. We are participating in daily briefings hosted by the Lafayette Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness where we receive the latest updates from the National Weather Service and discuss the parish’s preparation for the rain we are expecting to experience from the hurricane. We will make every effort to keep you informed, particularly with respect to any school closures should that occur. Please stay tuned to local media and check our web site for updates.
