Superintendent Dr. Donald Aguillard recently made an announcement to board members that non- consumable science equipment will soon be purchased for all elementary and middle schools in the district. Working cooperatively with Latikka Magee, Director of Federal Programs, district administrators were able to budget $387,250 of one-time Federal Funds to provide roughly $50 per child for all third, fourth and fifth grade students in elementary schools. All elementary schools will receive a minimum baseline allocation of $10,000. Middle schools will also receive a minimum allocation of $5,000. Providing science equipment to elementary schools in the face of budget shortfalls has been a challenge in the district for the past several years, so this one-time allocation of funds is timely given elementary schools’ need for science equipment. “This allocation of funds will bring us a long way toward our goal of having fully equipped 21st-century science classrooms in our elementary and middle schools,” said Science Specialist Shauna LeBlanc.
The acquisition of the new science equipment also comes at a time when The Louisiana Department of Education is considering the adoption of new science standards for K-12 students. The proposed standards are currently posted for public review at:
