LPSS Staff Prepares Community Outreach Program to Discuss Tax Propositions

Lafayette Parish School Board members, Superintendent Dr. Donald Aguillard, and staff are preparing to conduct a community outreach campaign to spread awareness about two upcoming tax propositions to repair and replace Lafayette Parish school facilities and to fund the educational initiatives in the school system’s Vision 2020 strategic plan. There are currently 12 Community Information Meetings planned between now and March 23rd to inform parents and other stakeholders about the importance of the tax proposals. The meetings will take place in schools across the district so that parents and community members will have the opportunity to attend a meeting in their feeder zone. Meeting times and locations will be sent out in the near future.

The two tax propositions would total 16 mills and have the following areas of focus:

  • 11.5 mills would be used to pay off general obligation bonds for replacing some school system facilities including Carencro Heights Elementary and Lafayette High School and making improvements to LJ Alleman Middle, Katharine Drexel Elementary, WD Smith Career Center, and Broussard Middle.
  • 2.5 mills would be assessed over a 10-year period and dedicated to a facilities maintenance fund.
  • 2 mills would similarly be assessed over 10 years and be dedicated to projects, including school safety and security, technology upgrades, career and technical education, early childhood education, and other research-based initiatives aimed at improving student achievement.

School Board members and the superintendent wish to engage the community in a dialogue in an effort to create an awareness of the needs of the school system and its plan for moving forward.

Any community group wishing to schedule a meeting with School Board members or the superintendent to discuss the tax proposal should contact Dr. Aguillard’s office at 521-7014 or 521-7015.

Community members wishing to assist the school system and engage in efforts to educate the public about the tax propositions are also asked to contact Dr. Aguillard’s office.
