Northside High and Evangeline Elementary Schools Receive Nutrition Education Materials Through USDA Grant

As part of a Team Nutrition Grant awarded by the Department of Agriculture, Northside High School and Evangeline Elementary School were each awarded funding that has enabled them to purchase new nutritional education materials for their campuses.

Nutrition Program Coordinator Celeste Finney says these items “are intended to be both educational and inspire students to explore nutrition and healthy eating. They’ll be a great asset to these school campuses.”

The funding — full delivery of which was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic — was used to secure the following items for both schools:

  • Customized cafeteria branding kits with serving line banners
  • Socially distanced, nutrition-themed floor decals
  • Nutrition-themed and age-appropriate banners and posters

In addition, Northside High added a moveable kiosk to its cafeteria during the 2019-2020 school year. Evangeline Elementary used the grant funds to pay for:

  • Yoga instruction and a curriculum guide for P.E. teachers (Fall 2020)
  • VeggieTales® stuffed animal characters for placement on the serving line when different fruits and vegetables are offered on the menu
  • Nutrition-related library books for K-5, including several nutrition books written in French for the school’s French Immersion students
  • Nutrition education bookmarks and stickers
  • A trauma-informed music playlist to be played during student transitions throughout campus
