Lafayette Parish School System recognized as state and regional leader in student achievement

LPSS Recognized

With the release of state test scores by the Louisiana Department of Education, Lafayette Parish is recognized as one of the Top Districts for One-Year Growth in LEAP (Louisiana Educational Assessment Program). Of the six school districts with 30,000 or more students, Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) ranks first in improving the percentage of students in grades 3-8 achieving Mastery or higher (MAS+) on state assessments. LPSS is also the one-year change leader among Regions IV and V in improving the percentage of students in grades 3-8 achieving MAS+.

In addition, two Lafayette Parish schools received special recognition. Early College Academy is ranked among the top 10 of all Louisiana schools for 2022 LEAP performance in MAS+, and Myrtle Place Elementary is the top school in the state for year-to-year improvement in LEAP.

“These outstanding LEAP results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our educators and school leaders who have continued to rise to the many challenges of recent years,” said LPSS Superintendent Irma Trosclair. “Because of their efforts, a growing number of students have not only recovered learning, they have surpassed pre-Covid assessment performance. As we prepare for the start of school, it’s important the community recognize the value of student attendance and family engagement in learning.”

Compared to the previous year, LPSS elementary, middle, and high school students improved performance on state assessments. Recently released scores from the 2022 LEAP spring testing cycle show an increase across all four subject areas (mathematics, English language arts [ELA], science, and social studies) for students in grades 3-8, as well as all high school courses tested (Algebra I, Geometry, English I, English II, Biology, and U.S. History).

Individual student results are available for parents to view on the LPSS website. An interpretive guide to better understand the results can be found on the Louisiana Department of Education’s website. This is the first in a series of planned communications celebrating student achievement details from SY2122.
