The Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) recently partnered with the Broussard community to host the inaugural Broussard CommUNITY School Adventure, a collaborative event led by local schools to celebrate unity and reinforce the importance of public education. The initiative brought together schools, families, and community members, demonstrating the strength of working collectively for a brighter future.

How It All Began: A Grassroots Effort for Unity

The CommUNITY School Adventure originated from a grassroots effort among school leaders at Katharine Drexel Elementary, Martial Billeaud Elementary, and Broussard Middle, who saw a growing need for stronger collaboration within the area. Their vision was to create an event that not only showcased the importance of public schools but also fostered deeper community connections.

“We wanted to find a meaningful way to unite our efforts,” explained Carlie Roszell, Principal of Katharine Drexel Elementary. Leading the charge alongside other school leaders, and with the support of LPSS’s Community Collaborations and Partnerships Coordinator, Traci Aucoin, the schools spearheaded the planning of the event. Their commitment was clear: to highlight Broussard’s educational resources and strengthen its sense of community. It wasn’t just a motto—it was a stance of heart: “We Are Broussard.”

Broussard CommUNITY School Adventure: A Celebration of Togetherness

Held in October, the event invited families to explore educational opportunities, local landmarks, and community resources across Broussard. Participants embarked on a self-guided route with stops at Katharine Drexel, Martial Billeaud, and Broussard Middle, as well as at the Police Department, City Hall, Valsin House, and Fire Department Station #1.

Each location offered interactive displays, hands-on learning experiences, and historical exhibits designed to foster stronger community ties. The event’s spirit was perfectly captured by Rachel Granger, Secretary of Katharine Drexel Elementary School, who shared, “These are still our families.” Her words highlighted the enduring connections between students and schools, even as they transition from elementary to middle school.

Why It Matters: Building Stronger Connections

The Broussard CommUNITY School Adventure was about more than just exploration—it was an opportunity to strengthen relationships within the community and reinforce public schools' central role in Broussard. By emphasizing mutual support and shared values, the event demonstrated the power of collaboration to create new opportunities for all residents.

The success of this event also established a foundation for ongoing partnerships. Schools across Broussard are already planning joint initiatives and events that build on the momentum of the CommUNITY School Adventure. “This is just the beginning of what we can achieve when schools and communities come together,” Roszell said.

Looking Ahead: A Shared Vision for the Future

The event, supported by sponsors including LPSS, St. Cecilia, Love Our Schools, Parish Proud, and the Broussard Chamber of Commerce, concluded with a community celebration at Arceneaux Park, complete with activities, refreshments, and a collective sense of accomplishment. Local schools are now preparing for the upcoming Noël à Broussard Parade, where they’ll continue to showcase their commitment to community unity and growth.

The Broussard CommUNITY School Adventure proved that when public schools lead with purpose, the community follows with heart. This event stands as a testament to the impact of collaboration—one that extends beyond the classroom and strengthens the entire community.
