As We Celebrate, We Secure—Why School Safety Remains Our Most Important Honor

Secure

As the school year draws to a close across Lafayette Parish, stages are set, gowns are pressed, and medals gleam with the promise of recognition. From kindergarten moving-up days to high school graduations, the air is filled with pride—and rightfully so. But even as we celebrate achievement, the Lafayette Parish School System remains anchored by a value that does not glitter but safeguards every moment: safety.

In today’s world, meaningful celebration is inseparable from meaningful protection. That’s why LPSS has implemented a district-wide Clear Bag Policy and Weapons Detection Protocol at all school-sponsored athletic and extracurricular events. These measures are not just security protocols—they are commitments. Commitments to our families, our faculty, and, most importantly, our students, that no honor ceremony or end-of-year gathering will come at the expense of peace of mind.

The Clear Bag Policy—which mirrors national standards seen in stadiums and arenas across the country—allows each visitor to bring one fully clear bag (no larger than 12” x 12” x 6”), with an additional small clutch or cosmetic-sized bag (no larger than 5.5” x 7.5”) permitted. Whether the event is hosted at a school gymnasium or off-campus venue, the standard remains consistent: clear, visible, and secure.

But visibility is only one part of the equation. Upon arrival, attendees will also pass through our Weapons Detection Systems—an unobtrusive but effective safeguard that silently affirms what every parent and grandparent wants to know: that their loved ones are protected, even in a crowd.

These policies are not reactive. They are part of a larger LPSS philosophy that places Safety as one of our four foundational values, alongside Opportunity, Culture, and Growth. We know that academic success cannot flourish without a secure environment. The cheers of a packed auditorium should never have to compete with questions of “what if?”

We understand that for some, these procedures may feel inconvenient. But when measured against the cost of complacency, they are a small price to pay. Every clear bag is a symbol of transparency and trust. Every scan at our entryways is a silent guardian of joy.

To our community partners, our performing arts families, our athletic supporters, and all those who will walk through our doors in the coming weeks: we thank you for helping us uphold these standards. Because the true measure of a great district is not only found in test scores or trophies—but in how fiercely it protects the people it serves.

Let this season of celebration also be a season of safety.

Because every child walking across that stage deserves to know their story will continue long after the tassel turns.
