Safety Driven: LPSS Rolls Out New Transportation Technology

Safety Driven

The Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) is taking a major step forward in student safety—one of its core values—with the rollout of a new student transportation system during the 2025–2026 school year. Designed to give families greater peace of mind, the system will provide real-time monitoring of student ridership and help the district operate one of Louisiana’s largest school transportation fleets more efficiently.

With over 230 buses and 1,000 routes, LPSS is utilizing a platform created by Tyler Technologies, a nationally recognized provider of school transportation software. The new system will verify when students get on and off the bus—but only while they are on board—allowing transportation staff and school administrators to monitor ridership safely and accurately.

“This gives families peace of mind and helps us ensure students are safe while in our care,” said Superintendent Francis Touchet, Jr. “It’s a meaningful upgrade that supports our ongoing commitment to safety.”

How It Works

As part of the rollout, all students will receive new ID cards for the 2025–2026 school year. These cards will be scanned as students board and exit the bus, helping LPSS account for riders– and eventually families– in real time and adjust routes for improved efficiency.

The system features include:

  • Tracking bus locations and student ridership
  • Maintaining optimized, data-driven route planning
  • Managing driver assignments and vehicle maintenance
  • Communicating delays or schedule changes to families quickly and easily

While the system is currently being phased in, full implementation is expected by Spring 2026. This gradual rollout allows for staff training, technical preparation, and feedback from school communities to ensure a smooth and effective transition.

Supporting Families Every Step of the Way

To assist families during the transition, LPSS has opened its Transportation Hotline at 337-521-RIDE, available during regular business hours. Whether parents have questions about bus assignments, student ID cards, or the new system, staff are ready to help.

“LPSS is committed to protecting our students and supporting our families,” said Touchet. “This new system reflects that commitment—and it brings us one step closer to a safer, smarter transportation experience for everyone.”
