Mapping Safety: LPSS and Lafayette 911 Launch a State of the Art System

Digital Mapping

The Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS), in partnership with Lafayette 911, hosted a joint demonstration this week of a new digital mapping system designed to enhance emergency response at all LPSS school facilities. This state-of-the-art system provides first responders with instant access to detailed layouts of every campus—supporting faster, more coordinated responses in the event of a crisis.

Developed proactively ahead of newly enacted state legislation, the system was in place even before the passage of Act 425 during the 2025 Regular Legislative Session, which now requires school facility mapping statewide. LPSS's forward-thinking approach continues to set the standard for school safety in Louisiana.

“In an emergency, every second counts,” said Lafayette 911 Director Craig Stansbury. “This system allows dispatchers and first responders to see detailed building layouts in real time, helping us respond faster and more effectively. It’s a testament to the collaboration between Lafayette 911, LPSS, and local law enforcement—and our shared commitment to protecting students and staff.”

LPSS Superintendent Francis Touchet, Jr. emphasized that the new mapping system builds upon an already comprehensive safety plan in the district.

“Student safety is—and always will be—our top priority,” said Touchet. “This mapping system adds another layer to the robust safety measures we’ve already put in place, including secured entrances, weapons detection systems, and trained school resource officers at every campus. Our partnership with Lafayette 911 is just one more way we are working proactively to protect our students and staff.”

Through this collaboration, LPSS reaffirms its role as a leader in school safety—investing in tools, partnerships, and strategies that ensure campuses are as prepared and protected as possible.
