Safety Speak: Making Sense of School Crisis Codes

Safety Speak

We know it can be unsettling to receive a message that your child’s school is in a safety mode like “shelter in place” or “lockdown.” Understanding what these codes mean can help ease anxiety and keep everyone informed.

LOCKDOWN
Used when there’s a potential threat inside the school.
Example: A student once brought an antique artillery shell. It was harmless, but we stayed in lockdown until we were certain.
What happens: Students remain in classrooms or move to secure spaces.
Communication: Parents receive a notification when lockdown begins, updates as needed, and an alert when it’s lifted.

SHELTER IN PLACE
Used when a threat is outside the school but nearby, such as severe weather or police activity in the neighborhood.
Example: Law enforcement serving a warrant near campus.
What happens: Students and staff remain indoors until the situation passes.
Communication: Parents are notified and updated as needed.

HOLD
Used for minor situations inside the school that require clear hallways, like a medical emergency.
What happens: Students stay in classrooms while staff and responders handle the situation.
Communication: Because there’s no danger, parents are not notified.

EVACUATION
Used when students and staff must leave the building for safety reasons, such as a fire alarm or gas smell.
What happens: Everyone moves to a safe location outside the building.
Communication: Parents are notified and updated.

ALL CLEAR
Sent once the situation is resolved and normal operations resume.

Our priority is always student safety. These codes allow us to respond quickly, keep students secure, and ensure parents receive accurate, timely information.
