Lafayette Parish students are about to experience major upgrades. Thanks to thoughtful planning, strategic budgeting, and strong leadership from the Lafayette Parish School Board and Superintendent Francis Touchet, a series of construction projects are underway that will dramatically improve school culture and enhance the learning environment across the district.
For decades, many campuses have been forced to rely on portable buildings — some for more than thirty years — even though they were never meant to be a permanent solution. Now, that chapter is finally closing. “Our students deserve permanent classrooms that reflect their value and potential,” said Superintendent Francis Touchet. “Replacing aging portables with modern learning spaces strengthens our culture, supports strong instruction, and creates environments where students and teachers can thrive.” The district has secured the funding needed to construct brick-and-mortar additions that will give students the stable, modern classrooms they deserve.
Replacing Portables With Permanent, Purpose-Built Classrooms
Wing additions at several campuses will allow schools to relocate students from deteriorating portable units into new, fully equipped classrooms. These additions create a safer, more comfortable, and more academically supportive environment. They also allow teachers to build community and culture within their grade levels and subject areas, instead of being spread across temporary structures.
These improvements reflect the district’s commitment to long-term planning and fiscal responsibility. By prioritizing these projects and identifying the funding to make them possible, the School Board and Superintendent Touchet are ensuring that students benefit from permanent learning spaces that meet today’s standards.
Athletic Facilities That Build Pride and School Spirit
Culture is more than academics — it is about belonging. That is why the district is also investing in athletic facilities that help students take pride in their schools.
New and upgraded athletic spaces at Milton, David Thibodaux STEM Magnet Academy, Southside High School, and Lafayette High School are designed to enhance students’ physical education experience and strengthen school spirit. These facilities serve as community hubs, giving students a place to grow, compete, and represent their schools with pride.
A New K–8 School Bringing Opportunity to North Lafayette
One of the most transformative projects is the construction of a brand-new K–8 school in north Lafayette. This campus will replace outdated, decaying facilities and create a beautiful, modern environment for students and families.
This investment represents more than a building; it represents the district’s belief in the potential of the community it serves. Children in this area will learn in bright, thoughtfully designed spaces that support strong culture, collaboration, and growth. For families who have waited generations for equitable facilities, this project marks a new beginning.
A Better Future, Built Together
Every one of these projects reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to culture, opportunity, safety, and growth. By eliminating portables, constructing permanent academic wings, investing in athletic facilities, and building an entirely new K–8 school, LPSS is demonstrating a clear vision for the future.
These improvements are more than construction — they are a promise to students that their educational experience matters.
