At J. Wallace James Elementary School, creativity is now more accessible than ever. The school recently celebrated the grand opening of the Acadiana Art Closet, a unique space designed to share art supplies and inspire creativity across the community.
Modeled after a “Little Free Library,” the Art Closet allows students, families, and community members to take what they need and donate what they can. Whether someone is looking to try a new hobby or needs materials for a class project, the supplies are free and available to all.
The idea was brought to life through the vision of parent and artist Whitney Storey, who partnered with the school’s visual arts teacher, Mrs. Segura. With support from the 24 Citizen Project, their collaboration turned into a meaningful resource for students and families. J. Wallace James is the first school in the area to host an Acadiana Art Closet, making it a model for future community-centered initiatives.
Adding to its significance, students played a direct role in the project by designing and painting the artwork that brings the closet to life. Their contributions reflect the very purpose of the space: creativity shared, celebrated, and sustained.
The Acadiana Art Closet is more than a place to find supplies. It represents a culture of generosity, collaboration, and artistic expression—one that invites the entire community to take part.
