Early Childhood Screening at LPSS: Helping Little Learners Start Strong
Many families do not realize that the Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) offers early childhood evaluations. These screenings can identify delays early, when support makes the biggest difference in a child’s future success.
Early intervention helps children build the skills they need for school and life. When concerns are addressed during the preschool years, children are more likely to thrive later in school and may need less support as they grow. LPSS is committed to giving every child the strongest possible start.
How Parents Can Tell If a Child May Need Evaluation
A child may need an evaluation if they are not reaching common developmental milestones for their age. These milestones include how they move, speak, play, and interact with others.
Here are a few examples of milestones from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that parents often watch for:
By 12 months
- Waves goodbye
- Calls a parent “mama” or “dada” or uses another familiar name
- Understands “no”
- Pulls up to stand
By 2 years
- Uses simple two-word phrases like “more milk”
- Points to body parts
- Kicks a ball
- Runs and walks up steps with help
By 3 years
- Holds simple conversations
- Asks who, what, where, and why questions
- Draws a circle with help
- Plays and interacts with other children
If a child is missing several milestones, or if a skill they once had disappears, it may be time to ask for a screening.
Who Is Eligible
Children are eligible for screening beginning at 3 years old.
What Services Are Available
If a child under age 4 qualifies for services after an evaluation, LPSS may provide:
- Special instruction
- Speech therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Physical therapy
- Adaptive physical education
- Audiological services
- Nursing services
These services help children strengthen communication, motor skills, and other essential developmental areas.
Why Early Intervention Matters
The preschool years are some of the most important years in a child’s life. Acting early can lead to positive, long-lasting effects on learning, confidence, and overall development. Early support gives children a stronger foundation and can reduce the need for more intensive services later.
How to Get Started
