Communication Tips

  • Be consistent! Don't expect your child to be able to use any communication system without repeated trials in many different settings. Sometimes students won't immediately use their systems and the efforts are discontinued by everyone. Be patient, persistent and repetitive before abandoning a particular system.
  • Sometimes students may only need low tech assistance until specific skills are acquired. High tech devices are not necessarily beneficial to everyone.
  • Research has indicated that especially in young children while language is quickly emerging low tech systems such as picture boards and using pictures to supplement communication is preferred over high tech systems.

***Note:  Each individual case should be evaluated to make that determination.
